4. They took those ballots to a safe location...luckily it was optical scan,
so there is a paper trail...the main thing to BLAST at is what if it had been computer voting? And the memory card had failed...then there would be no record, it would all just go poof*

Glitches hit early voting
Volusia staff quickly solves problems

By JAMES MILLER
Staff Writer

Last update: November 02, 2004

In Daytona Beach, at about 7:15 a.m., a memory card in the voting machine at the City Island Library site failed after workers switched off the machine in order to move it -- a normal procedure, said Supervisor of Elections Deanie Lowe. The memory card was replaced before the doors opened at 8 a.m., and voting proceeded normally. Still, the 13,244 votes cast in the preceding two weeks in Daytona Beach have to be fed again into a voting machine today -- a process likely to take hours.

"We have all the ballots, and they will be counted," Lowe said. The ballots, which are stored in sealed envelopes in a vault at elections headquarters, will be unsealed in public in front of the three-member county canvassing board. All will be fed into a machine and their information placed on the same memory card used for voting at the Daytona Beach site on Monday.

Even so, television reports about the glitch stoked fears among some voters who earlier cast ballots at City Island.

6. Yes, fortunately it was an optical scan
ballot so they packed them up, under guard, and will count them later (we hope)

7. But who transported them? Who watched the ballots? Jeb and his friends?

9. Representatives from both parties watched the ballots
as they were transported, and I hope and expect that both parties will have reps present when they are counted.

10. Volusia-reason CBS backed off calling FL for Gore
"DELAND, Fla., Nov. 11 - Something very strange happened
on election night to Deborah Tannenbaum, a Democratic
Party official in Volusia County. At 10 p.m., she called the
county elections department and learned that Al Gore
was leading George W. Bush 83,000 votes to 62,000. But
when she checked the county's Web site for an update half
an hour later, she found a startling development: Gore's
count had dropped by 16,000 votes, while an obscure
Socialist candidate had picked up 10,000--all because of
a single precinct with only 600 voters."
                                      -- Washington Post Sunday , November 12, 2000 ; Page A22

"The mistakes, both of which originated with the counties,
were critical, since there were only about 3 percent of the
state's precincts outstanding at this time. They
incorrectly increased Bush's lead in the tabulated vote
from about 27,000 to more than 51,000. Had it not been for
these errors, the CBS News call for Bush at 2:17:52 AM
would not have been made." - source

11. This is why paper trails must become mandatory!
While most Florida counties are using these optical scanners, there are fifteen of our most populous counties that are relying on the touch-screen machines; and there is no paper trail for these machines, no way of reinstating the votes if the touch-screen machines fail! There is really no excuse for this. Nevada is using touch-screen machines too, but their machines do have a paper backup.
