If Kerry wins big, will all the voting problems get swept under the rug?
I'm one of those people who believes that the voting problems in 2000 were not an aberration. This is probably how things have always worked, it's just that people never paid much attention because you rarely had an election where voting problems accounted for the margin of victory.
I certainly hope that President Kerry places a national voter bill of rights near the top of the agenda.
It's even more telling that he'd win big in the face of all that. Making an issue of it makes his mandate that much more clear. And having the GOP stonewall a bill that insures people who register and want to vote get to vote exposes them for what they are.
I hope that voting problems that would challenge Kerry's victory DO get swept under the rug by the tide of turnout and the fact that any probs will be outside the margin of error. However, I DON'T think the larger issues of voting rights and proper voting procedures will be swept under the rug... That should CLEARLY be on the agenda after the election.
The repubs are not going to let this one go easily. There will be lawsuits and challenges no matter who wins. I guess the only upside will be if some of the voting problems get fixed (which should have been made more of a priority after 2000)
