Election day should be a national holiday
The #1 reason cited for people not voting on election day is conflicts with work or school.

Knowing that this is the case, shouldn't we want to make voting as easy as possible and facilitate it as much as we can?

Not only that, but isn't our right to choose our own government something that's worthy of a celebration?

I know this isn't a new idea, but I believe its time has come.

1. Should hold elections over the course of a weekend
2 days to vote & get everything sorted out.

2. Most every country in the world votes on Sunday

US is the exception. I think it's a tradition more than anything else.

4. Election Day should be national holiday. We should make it easy...
...to vote, not as difficult as possible. Why do the repukes try to limit the number of voters? Why do the repukes try and harass legal and lawful voters?

7. I absolutely agree
Everything but polling places should be closed from 6am to 6pm on election day except polls, bars, and coffee shops.

8. It's a crime that it hasn't been made one already!
What are the people in our party thinking? They should have done this when we had some control of the government!

9. Australia always votes on a Saturday
And it's not always the exact same Saturday of the year either!

America could afford to drop a few sacred cows like having Election Day on a weekday during a time of the year when weather can be counted on to be lousy. Why not a weekend day, or a national holiday? There's no particular magic to the first Tuesday in November.

12. Yep, I thought that Election Day should be a National Holiday
I mean, Election Day is the day of Democracy, so shouldn't such a day be a holiday to make sure that as many people vote as possible? And America is supposed to be the oldest example of Democracy in the Modern Era?

13. Bad Idea
If it's a national holiday, people will treat it as such.
It's a voting day

15. If people are at work, they can't vote!
What do you mean "they will treat it as such"?

If people have a day off of work, then they can vote!

On Thanksgiving, people eat turkey, on Christmas, they open presents, on a voting holiday they would vote!

16. Does the President have the authority to declare these holidays?
Or does he need Congressional approval?

Because that is an excellent idea.

18. It Should Indeed
There is nothing more important to this country than the choosing of a government every 4 years. It is more important than punching any time clock or observing any other national holiday for that matter. This business of people having to be penalized financially for time lost to go vote is the most outrageous thing I have ever heard.
My German friend cannot believe that Americans are not given paid time off to go vote as they are. I think though in election 2004 people that care will accept and endure any hardship necessary to have a say about throwing Bush out on the street.
