City GOP challenges absentee ballot count

Philadelphia's Republican Committee today sued city election officials in federal court and sought an emergency order barring the counting of absentee ballots before Friday, contending election officials failed to provide the GOP with an advance copy of approved absentee voters.

Michael Meehan, general counsel to the Republican City Committee, filed the suit this morning on behalf of himself and officials of the Pennsylvania Republican State Committee, arguing that without a court order, absentee ballots will be opened and counted tonight making it impossible to challenge the qualifications of an individual voter.

Lawyers for Meehan and for the City Commissioners and Board of Elections were in chambers with U.S. District Judge William H. Yohn Jr. early this afternoon. The judge had not ruled, and it was not clear if a hearing would be held later today.

these are the absentee ballots.

They already sued and won an extension for the military ballots because one guy, a Bush supporter, claimed he got his ballot too late to mail back in time.
