A note on my return from the polls
We got there about 1pm and stayed until about 2. I had my Veteran for Kerry badge on.

It seemed to be the lunch break when we got there; about 1:30 the crowds started coming back in. Once again, I feel pretty good about our chances here.

At 1pm, the only guy out there electioneering was a guy from Fayetteville Right to Life. Conversation follows:

"You're from Right to Life, huh?"
'Yes. Yes I am.' (Chest puffed out.)

"Then you're campaigning for John Kerry, the only candidate in this race who can reduce the abortion rate?"
'No, I'm campaigning for President Bush, the candidate who will outlaw abortion.'

"Then how come the abortion rate is higher under Bush than it was under Clinton?"
'No! Bush has cut abortion! He'll eliminate it in his second term!'
"Actually, the abortion rate is about 25 percent higher under Bush than it was under Clinton. How could that be?" (Okay, don't kill me with the correct number. I know mine is wrong. I also know I needed a reasonable-sounding number quick.)
(long pause) 'Because it's all Clinton's fault! He put condoms in the schools and got kids hooked on sex, and they kept having it after President Bush took them back out!'

(I don't make this shit up, folks, this guy actually believes Clinton was responsible for kids liking sex! The Clenis is a powerful thing, but come on!)

I went away from this guy...too creepy for me. I started walking through the parking lot greeting people as they started coming up to vote and asked them to vote for Kerry. A couple people asked about the Swifties and I explained that none of the SBVB (Swift Boat Veterans for Bush) were on Kerry's boat when he was in Vietnam, that most of them weren't in the unit when Kerry was in Vietnam, that all but one of Kerry's shipmates support him, and that the group was tied to Bush, and that ended the SBVB shit in a hurry. A couple of them asked about the weapons cuts and I explained how Cheney asked for those cuts to be made--and that Kerry wanted to cut less than Cheney did. I explained to one guy who asked about the cut in intel spending that it was in response to the National Reconnaissance Office's building a new $227 million headquarters with part of the $1 billion in funds it misappropriated by cancelling a couple of new satellites then not returning the money to the treasury.

I hope some of it was effective. I think the Swiftie answers were. I hope the defense stuff was. Strangely enough, no one asked about the tax-raiser meme Bush was running on, and no one seemed to care about the flip-flop meme.

4. When phonics is taken away, you don't get pregnant
But other than that, it's about the same thing.
