As my door-knocking team was milling around at Minneapolis DFL operations hq. after finishing our first round, everyone was told to direct our attention to the front of the room for a talk by a surprise guest. It turned out to be actress Sharon Stone.
She gave a really good pep talk, telling about how she was flying around the country campaigning, and how, on her last plane flight, she had been approached by four people in about 3 minutes thanking her for what she was doing.
She also addressed the question of celebrities campaigning for Dem candidates by revealing that before she became famous, she grew up in a blue collar family with a father who never finished school and a mother who dropped out of high school but went back and graduate with her (Sharon's) class. Therefore, her story was the epitome of the American dream
Then she asked if there were any 18-year-olds in the room. A bunch of people persuaded--DU's own wheresthemind--to raise his hand, and Stone said, "There, that's what a soldier looks like. People who look like that are away from home and scared and not receiving proper support.
She also expressed support for stem cell research.
We had been out running around, but she told us that exist polls were showing Kerry ahead in Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, but that we shouldn't take that knowledge as a signal to chill, but as fuel for further efforts.
So, anyway, I can tell you that Minneapolis is fired up. When I went over this morning, I had trouble finding a place to park and had to drive around for 15 minutes. The place was packed, and the DFL has already been able to make two rounds of every targeted precincts. We'll be going back starting at 3:30PM to get the people coming home from work.
Funny note: As I was typing this, the phone rang, and it was the Bush campaign asking if I was planning to vote for Bush! (They must be scraping the bottom of the barrel if they're calling my neighborhood, which has street-to-street Kerry signs. I didn't feel like getting in a long discussion, so I just said that I had already voted for Kerry. The volunteer said "thank you for voting" and hung up.
