We Might Need to Start Calling Our Senators.
The Supreme Court is the one thing that we can't afford to give-up any more ground on. If we let Bush appoint Scalia clones to the court, we could lose it for a good 20 to 30 years. Damage control on this this issue should be of PARAMOUNT importance to our party in the coming years. Hell, look at the past 36 hours - we've seen the advantage of a properly-stacked court system. The courts have the least powerful checks on their powers, and they often have the final word on ALL issues.

Should Bush indeed win, I will be calling each Democratic senator and each "moderate" Repub senator with this message:

"Hi. I'm Tommy. I'm what you might call a core Democratic party voter. I show-up to every single election, from dog-catcher to President. I hand-out flyers. I work GOTV operations. I give money. I do a lot for our party.

"I'll tolerate a LOT of disappointment from my party. Lord knows I've seen enough in the past four years, and I'm still sticking with you. But let me make myself clear: if you let one single Scalia clone onto the court, I QUIT. No more volunteering. No more activism. No more money. No more voting. I QUIT.

"I hope that this is abundantly clear. Thank you for your hard work, and good luck with your filibuster."

We might want to consider making this clear to them. I'm even willing to tolerate a bit of financial turmoil; it can be cleaned-up eventually. But basic civil rights questions being settled on the court? That could take decades to remedy. This is something not to be played with.

2. I'm not much better off than you.
Here in Texas.. (ugh).

Still, the point would be to make it clear to the Democratic establishment that their lives are on the line with this issue. I have no problem calling all 45 Democrats and making this clear to them.. and if a swarm of liberal voters does this, they won't want to piss-off the same core group of voters who send them to office every 6 years.

3. This is a wonderful idea
We worked our butts off, now our Senators/Reps must do the same, even tho they are outnumbered. Supreme Court appointments will change and damage this country for an untold number of years.

5. I'm dead serious.
We do tolerate a lot from our own party. It's time we make a stand on them. Force them to kowtow to our one simple wish.

And a big wish it is.

The current average length of a Supreme Court justice's term is ~18 years. We're not just voting for a four-year term; we're also voting for potential decades of decision-making in the judiciary.

We've seen the damage that the judiciary can do when the other side gets to make all of the appointments. Just look at the Ohio ballot challengers lawsuit as a prime example. If an executive order, or piece of legislation is remotely controversial, it'll end-up before the court to be settled. Given how the checks on judicial power are really, really weak, the Supreme Court pretty much has the final say on a HUGE number of issues. Which is why we need to make a stand on it.

10. There are a few Republicans in the northeast that we can lobby as well.
We can call them posing as crossover voters and demand that they fight like hell against extreme nominees. After all.. if these "moderate" Republicans are so in favor of a right to choose (etc), certainly they'd do everything to fight nasty nominees from getting through.. right?

7. I TOTALLY AGREE. I said something like this earlier
Edited on Wed Nov-03-04 07:06 AM by Sugarbleus
in the campaign............WHERE THE HELL ARE THE DEMOCRATS WHEN WE NEED THEM? I wondered why more dems didn't come out and back Kerry and shout and stomp and raise hell when he was fighting the bush cartel!

I also said in this forum a little while ago, that if Kerry doesn't win this thing.................I QUIT. I've had enough. Too wishy washy for me. Either shit or get off the pot!

I'll be looking for another party to flow with..if any exist.

Until we know how things work out, no republican should get anywhere close to me, as they will have to have my boot surgically removed from their ass if they do!!

ON EDIT: Frankly, this looks more and more like a fascist coup..just like I and many others predicted. I never dreamed our country would come to this........so many happy years ago.

9. In Ohio, Voinovich and DeWine have publicly asked Kerry to concede.
That shows you what we're up against here.
