America is now a right-wing country
Even with Ohio still being counted, too much of the country turned red. Republicans have gained too many seats in Congress. Many anti-gay measures have just passed. I've come to the conclusion that the country has gone to the far right. The only way to bring it back to the middle is to strengthen the left.

This is why, regardless of how Ohio turns out, I'm going to begin the first part of my "Plan B" tomorrow. I am going to become a monthly donor to the ACLU and increase my monthly donation to People For The American Way. I hope everybody else will do the same! I will complete the rest of my Plan B (contacting Congress and the moderate Supreme Court justices) when we know for sure who will be in Congress.

1. Agreed
It's clear. And bizarre, considering that Canada and all of Western Europe has become more liberal and more civilized over the last several years.

13. Take your own advice
Look at the vote distribution, it's very close. Just because a state is called a "red state" doesn't mean that everyone in that state subscribes to that ideology.

Many (if not most) of these states are close to 50/50 in vote distribution. When you actually talk to people about issues and beliefs, the margins narrows, in our favor. Unfortunately, most of us don't actually get the chance to talk to the people they claim to understand.

5. That's a very good idea
These groups provide the slightest semblence of hope.

This has been a bad night. I always feared that the gay marriage amendments would bring out the fundies and sure enough it seems they did.

The dark road seems to have just gotten darker. The near term future looks bleak.

6. And BBV made it happen!!!!
My forefathers fought in the revolution (but I will not join the DAR). We have massive amounts of legal expertise.

I have more than enough faith in them!

7. No it isn't.

"If" we lose. We need to take a serious look at the party structure and make changes.

This election should have been a Kerry slam dunk, and yes, fuck everyone, I AM ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE who believes DIEBOLD gave this election to shrub in terms of the popular vote.

This stinks like a banana republic.

But I will never surrender who I am.

I am a fucking Democrat, and fuck the republicans.

8. It has been a right-wing country since the 50's.
It's now an extreme far-right-wing quasi-fascist country.

My plan B is moving to my second home, Japan.

9. We need to call our senators.
Should Bush indeed win, I will be calling each Democratic senator and each "moderate" Repub senator with this message:

"Hi. I'm Tommy. I'm what you might call a core Democratic party voter. I show-up to every single election, from dog-catcher to President. I hand-out flyers. I work GOTV operations. I give money. I do a lot for our party.

"I'll tolerate a LOT of disappointment from my party. Lord knows I've seen enough in the past four years, and I'm still sticking with you. But let me make myself clear: if you let one single Scalia clone onto the court, I QUIT. No more volunteering. No more activism. No more money. No more voting. I QUIT.

"I hope that this is abundantly clear. Thank you for your hard work, and good luck with your filibuster."

10. The problem is that if these results are accurate, Dems can't get elected
... without appealing to the broader population. There will have to be a reason for a shift back to the middle. That will likely come through a return to a centrist-like media (with the help of AAR).

The politics will have to move to the middle... but the institutions of politics have to give voice to the democrats.

Until there is a social, economic or structural sea change... it won't likely happen.

I'm at a loss at this point, but I'll be supporting the liberals... because we need that voice. But I think its the centrists that have the best shot at regaining power.

FTR, Dean is close to my definition of a Democratic centrist. Kucinich is an example of someone with quality liberal ideals that I don't think can take the party back.

11. Maybe on wedge issues, but in reality
if Americans understood the Bush agenda like we do, they would not vote for it.
Most Americans are closet liberals and do not even know it. They believe in much the same things we do, but are led astray by poor media reporting, well packaged campaigns and wedge issues.

14. America is also transistioning from Republic to Empire
Much as Rome did 2000 years ago. Unless this can be stopped this country lives on borrowed time. All Empires collapse from within due to corruption and from what I see, Shrub is today's Nero fiddling away as America burns.
