I Personally Don't Care that Bush is Re-Selected
My personal life is little affected by the horrible policies of Bush and Company.

I'm 52 years old, and my wife and I have no children, and hence no grand-children.

No flesh and blood of mine is subject to the War, the Draft, higher tuition, poor public education or a poor job market.

I'm a law abiding citizen that believes deeply in civil liberties. In other words, as my Labor Attorney says, we fight for rights that we, personally will probably never need.

My job is secure and can't be outsourced. I have a moderately paying job in the service sector with health insurance. I work at a race track (Mutuel Clerk), with untouchable seniority.

I'm the President of my Union, in the most pro-labor state in the nation, Massachusetts. We have an 85% pro-labor, Democratic legislature, and a pro-active, pro-union Attorney General (Reilly).

I own my own home, with my lovely wife, and none of our investments are in stocks.

I will hold out hope that Kerry can still pull this out, against all the odds. After all, the only state that we flipped was New Hampshire, and I spent 15 days up there in the last 4 months working for Kerry and the Democrats. We also unseated an incumbent Repuke Governor (Benson), and I can't wait to get my hands on Romney in 2 years here in Mass.

So, personally, Bush's election has less negative affect on me than almost anyone else I know, except the very wealthy.

It's not for me, or my family that I cry today. It is for my friends who don't recognize the oncoming train headed their way and, most importantly, my country, that I love so dearly.

1. I live in NJ and I'm worried we're going to get attacked again.
By we I mean all the populous cities that voted for Kerry and Gore.

But aside from that, I'm very very glad and feel lucky I live here.

3. You *are* lucky to live there. I'd join you if I could.
I am (figuratively) imprisoned in Virginia. I've been un- and underemployed here for two years, since leaving school (with just my thesis left to go towards a master's) and even if I had the barest means to move and try and find work in a blue state (the odds of which, given that I can't find work here, I don't particularly like), I don't have one doorstep I can arrive on, I don't have one friend anywhere I can turn to for help. So instead I get to rot here, in the Old Dominion, Mother of Presidents, and now Home Of An Infinite Supply Of Bigots And Assholes.

4. tj, it is just a matter of when, no matter who was elected last night,
on that everyone agrees. It is a bummer and it is true. These past few weeks I just finished the 9/11 Report. Difficult reading to follow, extremely interesting but so multi-faceted, it took me awhile with all my duties and traveling to plow though it, but I now want to go back and re-read it; very thought provoking and I recommend it for all, especially north-easterners. I work in the city and it is always on my mind. Especially since one of my commuter transfer points is the E train and Path train from NJ at the world trade center. (Have a pad in NJ and overnight there maybe 3 nights a month)

I'm too old to be drafted, have no kids that age, no kids in a public school, have some level of financial security, and live in a blue state. My life probably will not be affected in a dramatic way (unless, perhaps, Bush's insane foreign policy really does result in another visit from Osama). But I believe in what this country used to stand for, and it just kills me to see it being captured by a sort of preppy Taliban. We really have to act....

7. I'm sick at heart.
I feel for my country, and I fear it will never again be as I once knew it, just a handful of years ago.

5. I'm also 52 with no children...
I'm married and my husband and I both have serious chronic illnesses. We live on Social Security. The premiums on Social Security will go up soon, so we have to deal with that. Right now, we live in my mother's house because we're her caregivers. When she dies, we have noplace to go--the rents around here are way beyond our reach. So, we can count on being sick and homeless in the future. Whoopee.

9. I believe my heading
says Re-selected, not re-elected.

I know the difference, also.

10. My apologies.
You're correct. No sleep for 36 hours will do that to you. Peace.

11. Zanana I'm on SSI
Just existing. I live with my mom, and she's getting old. She wont write out a will, since she says she's not ready to die yet *sigh*.. so when she does go, the house will go to her husband who can't stand me, then I too will be homeless. I'm living the Amerikan nightmare.

8. I hear ya. Bush election will be less damaging to me than for
many others. I fear for them. And oh yeah. How long before gasoline is $3.00 an hour? :eyes:

12. Like you I don't think the bush regime is going to effect
my husband and myself that much, but the children and grandchildren
are in for a hard time. Even if we know that the election was stolen
again the truth is there are way too many people that did genuinely
vote republican and that fact is very worrisome. They seem to want
more of an aggressive style of government that is insensitive to
opposing views either from other countries or from American citizens.

We can overcome a lot of damage that will occur in the next four
years, but if the Supreme Court is stacked with young dedicated
republican judges our constitution is in jeopardy.

I am so sad today, its as though someone I love died.....I wonder
if it is my country.

13. same situation for me, but I can't stop fighting
Just moved from overseas to a brand new home, have just purchased 2 new cars, my husband will be seeing no new taxes, my daughter goes to a private pre-school, my son has insurance to cover all his special needs, have help with the house cleaning, play lots of golf, my parents will retire with plenty of money, my youngest sister was just promoted....so all in all my life is wonderful.

It's the other folks I worry about, like my middle sister who is single with a child, working, but only enough to pay the bills and childcare. The seniors in my local area, who have seen record low amounts of food for their food pantry. The working parents who don't have anytime to read, see or eat with their children, because they are working 2 and 3 jobs.

And the people and the children in other parts of the world that used to hold America in such high regard, who now have lost hope.

:(

14. I love what your lawyer said about
people fighting for rights they would never personally never need. That is what separates "us" from "them."

15. I have a friend who is in similar circumstances.
...steady job for 14 years, no wife, no kids - nothing. He can't stand bu$hit but isn't really that upset because it doesn't affect HIM.

He says:

Que Sera Sera - 'whatever will be will be' (blah blah)

He isn't nearly as sensitive as you are to the plight of OTHER people.

Good for him. HE is taken care of no matter what. He has a very charmed life.

MYSELF, and others, however, are screwed. We can't get jobs, much less decent ones - they're all being sent to India/China, or just ceased to exist. We're in our 40s or 50s and too old to start over and have no $ for going BACK to college - after all we were doing good to get ONE degree much less having to pay for another when we need to be saving for retirement, instead, or sending our own kids to college. I guess we can go flip burgers. Work at Wal-Mart. Dig ditches.

Ladeda...we're f*cked.

Again.
