1. I Know It's Unpopular To Say...
but I have republican and democratic friends and thats how I like it. (albeit, the # of my democratic friends outweighs republicans by huuuuuuge margins)

2. I'm so pissed off at my one red "friend"
I don't know what the fuck to say to him. Thankfully he's not the gloating type but I know he hates Kerry with a passion. I just don't know how I can be his friend any more.

11. I've got one who IS the gloating type
And worse than that, she won't do it openly. She's one of those sweet seeming passive-aggressive types. And she doesn't know her ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to politics so she can't win an argument. She just drops some disparaging little comment into the conversation and gives you the wide eyed butter wouldn't melt look. If you refute what she says (not hard to do) she get's hurt and says you're mean. I'm avoiding her like the plague for the next few days and will most likely drop the friendship since politics aside, I don't really like her that much. Other pukes I know I really don't have a problem continuing the friendship so long as we stay off politics for a while.

8. I won't say it's wrong
Partially because of my age and location, most of my good friends happen to be liberal or Democratic. But I wouldn't break up a friendship because they vote Republican.

9. I've tried, but I have to keep my closed so much
that I don't feel like we're really friends. Perhaps we're acquaintances.

Also, I think that there is something inherently wrong in the hearts of many Repubs. When lowering one's own taxes is more important than making sure a poor old widow on Medicaid can get new dentures, or that all children, regardless of race or income, can get a first class education, there is seriously something wrong with your ability to care for your fellow man. And to top it off by calling yourself religious and questioning the morality of those who disagree with you, well, those peeps are not my peeps.

Red Americans think we live in a Hobbesian "every man for himself" world.

Blue Americans belive we live in a community, and that our actions impact others.

I'll take the community and the people in it for my friends any day.

10. It's a personal choice...
and for me, the answer is a resounding No. I cannot be friends (a friend being someone I would die for) with someone who supports the right wing agenda. Our perspectives on life would be far too different.

12. Naaahhhhh
I have one friend from childhood with whom I have remained friends, and she and her husband are big dittoheads, but we don't talk much. Other than that, I try to stay away from them. I tried this past year to join message boards with Repugs on them and thought there were some friendships built, but they were just nasty, evil people and I quit the board. I don't think they have hearts.

14. I'm friends with a couple Republicans who hate Bush
Edited on Wed Nov-03-04 06:50 PM by Kaelinn
They're always bitching about how their party has been taken over by Falwell's ilk, and want to get it back to what it should be (smaller government, responsible spending, etc.). No problems with them. But your average Bush-supporting, pro-"life" (but pro-war and pro-death penalty) sheep? Not on your life.

I am, however, related to one of them and forced to deal with him and his similarly moronic girlfriend on a regular basis. *shudder*

EDIT: parentheses

No more Ms. Nice Guy. I agree with a poster in another thread who said that he/she felt insulted by each and every Repub. I am a business owner and I know quite well the political leanings of my clients. I have to be civil and provide services to them, but my business software can be adjusted to reflect an invisible surcharge onto whatever group of clients I choose. Nuf said. Sorry but I am angry.

18. Believe it or not, I have a lot of Freeper friends
They have learned early on, very quickly, not to discuss red-blue politics with me, and I with them.

On the other hand, I don't mind steering the conversation to other tangential topics, like the ever-worsening crushing of the little guy by multinational corporations, the need to keep government out of our bedrooms, and the need to protect our Constitution (2nd Amendment and all). They agree with me almost 100% of the time on these things. It's only when you use parse your discourse in red-blue/Dem-Rep/lib-con pinhead phrases that they revert to the reptile brain. Hannity's used those phrases to train them, and he's trained them well.

If they're a fundie, hell no.

If they're moderate or a liberal republican who see what's happening as the most vile acts committed, then YES.

22. I'm just as seeringly liberal/democratic as any of you but...
the most important thing is love for your fellowman, whoever that may be, not politics. We are being hypocritical if we cut off all ties from republicans, alot of them don't know any better. They are mal-informed like children of Africa are mal-nourished. If you befriend a rebuplican,
maybe you'll be able to make them become more moderate with their beleifs.
If we befriend reps we are uniting, and uniting is the first step to utopia.

I do think reps are being idiots though.

24. On a limited basis
My parents belong to a classic car club. The members are overwhelmingly white and fairly conservative. They keep their friendships strictly confined to cars and other harmless topics. That limits the scope of the friendships, but it works.

27. I have both
I live in TX so it is hard to avoid Red people. The majority of my friends are Dems but there are 2 good friends that I have that are Rep.

They truely are good people they are just misguided and have not found their way yet to the brighter side. Both are animal lovers, and they care about universal healthcare and good paying jobs for all Americans. One even had an abortion and came to me to protect her from her family that did not believe in her own right to choose. I have a feeling that one day they will finally turn themselves around and vote Dem.

28. I told a red coworker today to get away from me.
He came over to my cube to gloat about the election and I looked at him in the eyes and said sternly "Go away." I've never done anything like that before. I didn't talk to him for the rest of the day. I don't care if I ever talk to him again. I'm not worried about making nice with my enemies. The Reds have demonstrated to me through their votes just exactly how much they give a shit about the other 95% of the people in the world.

35. Although I agree with you that friendships can transcend politics, I'm
not at all surprised at the results of this poll.

People bash the Fundies for their religious zealotry but, at the same time, do not realize they've elevated their politics to the same level. It's the same mania.

I see no difference in intolerance.

36. They are the ENEMY of reason and of constitutional democracy
They believe that the government should be ruled by mystics and evangelicals and not by men or women of intellect and philosophy. They believe that we are immoral and, as immoral people, less than they, and, as less than they, are not equal in the law or esteem. They believe that we should serve the government and not the other way around. They believe our behavior is something to be legislated and that any opposition is equal to treason.

Freedom of speech does not mean you must tolerate someone's right to argue and agitate for your extinction. They are against the very concept that built America and are in league with those who want to destroy that ideal. They are the enemy of reason, of our Enlightenment heritage. They have murdered our civil rights leaders; they have murdered abortion providers; they have murdered our political leaders; they have murdered people they claim to be "sinners." This is the Taliban, American style. Give them no quarter, because you will receive none from them.

My father and my brother both knew how much this meant to me and did not throw it my face or say anything about it at all despite our screaming matches over the past few months. They are great people with bad politics. What bothers me is I honestly don't know if I would have done the same.
