What if the "culture war" gets violent?

I seem to remember reading something in school once about a time when American society was deeply polarized over a social issue, and it led to the bloodiest conflict in American history. Does that ring any bells with anyone else? Because it would really suck if it ever started to look like things were headed in that direction aga... oh fuck, please tell this country isn't doomed... someone, please? Say I won't have to shoot people? I don't want to shoot anybody. I think we can get through this. As bad as things are right now, it might actually take them getting a whole lot worse before people wise up and realize what the hell is going on. It's up to us as Progressives to keep reminding those we disagree with that by dividing ourselves further and further apart we run the risk of repeating one of the darkest moments of our history.

So please people, don't start shooting.

For one side of the equation, at least, the "culture war" has already gotten violent.

It's going to get very bad, I fear.
