Fallujah
http://news.google.com/news?q=Fallujah&hl=en&lr=&c2coff=1&sa=N&tab=nn&oi=newsr

Pick a story, any story.

While most of DU is wallowing in self-pity about the election, we are bombing Fallujah and preparing for a full ground assault.

An assload of our troops, no: of our fellow citizens, are about to die in a needless battle.

We need to do something and do it now.

I have many ideas, however I want to hear what you have to say about.

9. the people in Fallujah
didn't vote for Bush - the people who did couldn't give a flying fuck how many people we kill there, they'll be RAPT to see a bunch of dead "terraists" on Faux tonight it'll validate all their nasty little misconceptions.

SO yeah they'll get exactly what THEY want, shame for the people in Fallujah who'll be digging mass graves though

10. The blood of those people is not on my hands.
I did what I could, no one listened. Maybe one day these Bush voters will realize what they've done, but today is not that day.

12. this isn't about
"them" realising anything this is about dead Iraqis, not everything needs to be viewed through the prism of US politics.

I guess I know what you were getting at it just seems a little cold to dismiss what'll be happening to Fallujah families in the next week because the majority of AMERICANS voted for it to continue

2. It's going to happen - it has to happen
I have no doubt a majority of those troops voted for Bush. It probably would have happened even if Kerry had won.

We need to focus on stopping Bush's domestic agenda. Let him deal with his own mess over there - we can't do anything about it.

3. You have no idea how many of those troops voted for Bush
and I think it's highly inappropriate of you to suggest that IF they did they deserve to die or suffer (and they pretty much ALL suffer) -- and that IS the logical conclusion of your statement.

There are many fine members of the military who are real darned liberal. There are others who are simply clueless and don't pay any attention. I consider them victims as well -- of Bush, of the media, of their superiors who may urge them to vote for this assanine mis-adventure we're on. My heart goes out to each and every one of them, without exception.

5. My heart goes out to them too
But I read the articles...they want to go in there. They want to get the looming battle over with. The battle was looming regardless of who won the election.

8. Absolutely right. Most pay no attention, and are brainwashed
from boot to believe in the chain of command. * is at the top of that chain, so they support him reflexively. At least until they have a certain amount of experience.

Then there are those who cannot face the idea that they are risking their lives, and watching their buddies die, for a fraud and will not examine their own attitudes for fear of what they will find. It's hard to say that your best friend died for someone's lie - it devalues the sacrafice.

And there are those who are patriotic liberals, who believe in American democracy enough to volunteer to defend it. They cannot choose where they will serve, and will do their duty while trying to see that they represent America in the best way they can.

I came from a military family, and was a peacetime Marine in the mid-Seventies. You can't paint them all with the same brush.

4. The wagons of war are marching inexorably to their doom
We can only stand by and watch, and say I told you so, and give succor to the wounded and our sympathy to the newly bereaved. This is what America wants, this is what America will get. It is out of our hands now.

The path is chosen, the path to fascism and theorcracy. They will not be stopped till all are dead and bleeding on the ground, and then we can pick up our country again. In the meantime, be good, be loving, be understanding.

This may very well be the doom of America, and maybe it is necessary. Maybe it is time for the last super power to fall. Maybe we need to be driven down into poverty and war. Maybe we need to taste the 3rd worldness we have so easily inflicted on others. Maybe we need to go through this false Armageddon so the evangelical fools who have been brainwashed can finally be raptured by their own hands. They want class war. They want religious war. They want a new dark ages. It looks like they will get that.

Maybe California and Washington and Oregon need to ask British Columbia to occupy us to save us. Or maybe we need to just secede and go join Canada. We could even get French and German troops over here to protect us from George II.

Stunned in California......

14. Uh...
This has been going on since long before the election and the aftermath.

This election was a referendum on all this. You see the result.

Maybe it really will take people having their kids sent out to die in the ME for oil before they wake the fuck up. Clearly, they could care less about the lives of the volunteer army and some brown people who talk funny.

17. I meant the war
Fallujah is just the latest chapter, but anyone with a tv who occasionally watched the news knew this was coming down.

It's more of the same, it will just be more conentrated and bloody.

16. Yes. Those Army Apache pilots shipped out 2 weeks ago.
The Mosul/Falujah offensive has been underway for a while now.

So has an Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72)/Colin Powell tour of the Western Pacific that is notable for so many reasons.
