A boycott that will kill a hundred birds with one stone.
Today I decided to do whatever little thing that I still can to express my displeasure with the current situation.

I've decided to cancel my subscription to cable TV. It's gonna be gone tomorrow....no more "liberal" media in this house....no exposure to the sickening advertisements that go along with it.

The only thing that was worth a shit was the Daily Show....I will miss that greatly.

Might I suggest that we organize a nationwide effort to follow suit. I think it is doable....and I think it would send one hell of a message...and lets face it most all of us could use a little extra cash these days.

For the sports nutz out there....take your asses down to the local sports bar...eat some pretzels tip the bar people and get the hell out of the house if there is a game you just have to see.

For me and mine such a course of action will be win win win. We'll be happier, we'll spend our time more productively, we'll be taking money out of the pockets of CATV networks and the fuckers who sponsor their propaganda.

1. I am boycotting all t.v. news media. I am also going to
stop visiting corporate media websites. I'm voting with my choices and with my dollars now and I'm taking this very seriously. The media has failed us. I'll keep paying for cable, for now, but the corporate media is dead to me. I'm hardly even mad about it anymore. No more angry letters and e-mails. I'm done. I've just come to terms with it and I'm moving on. I can simply access the DU and other news sources around the world from my computer.

3. cable or sattelitte boycott is a TRIFECTA
1. You help starve the rightwing media borg.

2. You free your mind for real cultural enrichment.

3. You save $40 or so a month, which you can donate to some worthy activity or cause.

4. I love this idea too. Jon Stewart was the only thing I liked.
I want to do it. I need to keep it for my cable internet. If I can get a wireless wi fi connection there is probably some kind of free hub of service in my neighborhood. Anyone know about free wireless in the North Oakland/Berkeley Temescal neighborhood?

14. You can keep your internet and loose the cable TV
That's what I'm doing. My phone service is also delivered via cable. At least in my case, each respective service is independant of the others.

18. Um, if you access the web through a cable service
You already have free cable TV. Get a signal splitter and a length of coaxial cable. Split the signal and run the second cable into your TV.
Voila!!

5. There must be some way to get the Daily Show online
without subscribing to cable. Anyone know? I'd be happy to pay a reasonable amount. Maybe we could all write to Jon Stewart and suggest they find a way to make this available.

6. I'm cancelling my cable tv tomorrow.
All I watch anyway is the Daily Show, Bravo, and cable news (which is just a fucking pain in the ass). And I could definitely use the money. Goodbye to garbage!

16. Nice post!
I think the cable TV is a great start. It hammers the bastards from all sides. Now we need to concieve of the most efficient and effective means by which to put into action such a plan.

8. We canceled the subscription to the local newspaper, because
of a full page ad they ran the day before the election. Salacious garbage saying Bin Laden wanted Kerry to win! After cancelling we called the publisher to make sure he got the message! They can choose to accept dirty money, but they won't get any of ours ever again! Our local news now comes from the weekly African-American newspaper.

They will save you a little bit of money..not sure how much..I'd be happy to mail you one..but you have to give it to the installer.. My sons were too eager to get the damned dish, and would not wait,, the cards came the day after they got it :(

11. Yes.
Dish Network carries Comedy Central.

They also carry LinkTV and Free Speech TV, two great liberal/progressive networks. LinkTV carries "Mosaic", a daily summary of news programs from the Middle East translated into English. LinkTV also carries English language news from Deutsche Welle and Amy Goodman's "Democracy Now" (as does Free Speech TV). Free Speech TV carries amazingly good liberal activist programming (which is the reason why Rupert Murdoch won't offer it on DirecTV).

Then there's Independent Film Channel (part of the basic package) and Sundance (part of the Showtime package). Sundance has been playing "Bush's Brain" and the MoveOn trilogy ("Unprecedented", "Uncovered" and the new "Unconstitutional") this month - and they also carry the one-hour TV version of the "Al Franken Show". IFC along with Lion's Gate helped distribute "Fahrenheit 911".

12. I switched to Dish in July
It's like a different world. Link TV and Free Speech TV are addictive. I have over 80 hours of brilliant documentaries recorded.

Today I have been so depressed as have we all. So I've gone to my DVR and watched "Israel's Secret Weapon" about their nuke program.
"There's Something About the W" anti-Bush doc; "Need for Speed" docu about the military giving "go pills" and "non go pills" to the soldiers; and another one about the dangers of cell phone use and frequency from the towers. Not exactly "The Bachelor" or "Fear Factor"

I swear if even the dumbest of America caught a glimpse of some of these programs, they'd be scared shitless.

So, pardon me for a few day, I will curl up and suck my thumb and watch Free Speech. Be back for revolution and ass kicking shortly.

20. If you OWN A BUSINESS
And do not live in a right to work state ...

FIRE every employee with BC sticker on his car. I fired two today. The paper trail was easy to create because everyone slips up and fails to follow office policy.

If you do business with a Red CANCEL the contract
If a Red cuts your hair, quit going to their business
If a Red fixes your car, go someplace else

BOYCOTT ALL REDS. GET IN THEIR FACE!

FIRE 'EM. Put 'em on the unemployment line.

MESS UP THEIR LIVES

It's particularly fucking foolish when you consider there are far more Republican business owners than Democratic ones.

It's something Republicans would do, in fact.

31. Firing people who have different political views
isn't an act of strength, and won't get us anywhere if the Republicans retaliate. I just got done working for a company where easily 80% of the people were Bush supporters.

Pussies? Ridiculous. Doing something foolish and self defeating doesn't make you tough.

32. When your children come home ...
and say their friends' parents have said they can't play with them anymore because their parents (you) "hate America" then maybe you wil be in the same frame of mind I am, my friend.

When your own preacher holds you up before the congregation as a sinner because your sister is a lesbian, then maybe you will think as I do.

HURT THEM because they sure as HELL are going to hurt you.

I know a thing or two about victimhood, and firing people who have different political beliefs than you is no way to even the score, especially when it won't.

25. I would say do what you must
if not cable, cancel AOL, dont vacation to disney, but do soemthing and stick with it

Frugality may be the only choice
1) corporations dont get your money
2) You control your money, and build wealth which would be need later
3) wealth may be needed to buy essentials as they rise in price such as gas, healthcare, prescription drugs

However, I will not allow cable news to be watched on any of our 5 tv's with the exception of Keith O. I read DU to get a general idea of what's happening on the shows I boycotting. This arrangement has brought me great peace and satisfaction. I wish we could set up groups to WATCH and REPORT and let the rest of us boycott.

36. Well....
... I've felt for YEARS that you should be able (and the FCC should DEMAND this) to order whatever cable channels you want.

They each should have a monthly price and you should only get and pay for the ones you want.

Then, it would be much easier to kill all the bullshit on cable airwaves.

But that's not going to happen and though I never watch Fox news or CNN or MSNBC, I'm not about to give up my TV. Sorry.

37. I did that in 2000 - it's funny to see them beg me to buy cable
...especially when I don't miss it at all. I see the movies I want now, at the time I want, and I see no repeats. Renting DVDs is so much better than cable. I have no intention of going back either.

Every siz months or so, some marketeer can't understand why I don't have cable TV and they send someone to my house (Ray Bradbury would love this story) to cough and splutter to me, "but it's FREE!!" to my "I don't want what you're selling".

In fact, they're due for another shot at it about now. I should hose him down when he drops by, but he's just trying to put food on his family, so maybe I'll just let him shout at me again when I close the door in his face.

:)
