I think it will be Bill Frist...... Guliani's pro choice and pro gay in a a party of Talifundamentalists.. John McCain is too much the maverick...

58. Frist is the natural successor.
Don't they generally pick party leaders or party insiders - Bob Dole was the majority leader, George Bush was the heir to his father.

Plus he would sweep the south unless we put up someone like Bill Clinton.

51. Owens is screwed with a capital S.
The Dems just gained back both houses of our legislature for the first time since 1962. We've got him by the tail. With all the budget problems our state has had, the people decided that the Republican legislature couldn't fix things. Now Owens has nobody to work with and will be out of office due to term limits in 2006. If we win the Governorship in '06 then even his endorsement of the Republican candidate won't mean anything.

And yes, he and his wife are seperated. I doubt it's because of arguing over money.

6. McCain is too sick
to run. Guiliani and Ridge are considered too liberal.

The republican machine will clear the way for their man in 2007, just like they cleared the way in 1999 for one or two golden boys to have their go at it.

Meanwhile we'll have a 10 candidate Iowa caucus decide ours.

I don't get the man, after Bush murdered him in 2000 he hung tough with him this year, throwing away the very real chance to be VP on a unification ticket.

Oh well, I guess the Republicans have something on him? who knows.

But McCain will never be the nominee...the party can't control him, & that's why he didn't get the nomination in 2000.

22. Well, if we run a likable candidate that can motivate
our base, McCain will get destroyed with lack of support from evangelical Christians.

Plus, McCain has been against cutting taxes.

That makes him pro gay and anti-tax cut, which means he has no chance of getting the Republican party nomination.

Rudy can help them win close northern states - New Hampshire, NJ, PA...

And, since they won a lot of the South, Midwest & Mountain states by at least 10%, they might not care about the lower turnout among the Bible thumpers.

24. Whoever it is , he will lose
Bush's actions will have dire consequences. Bush won this election with the smallest margin of any sitting president since 1916 despite being "at war" and with an at least marginally OK economy. Without even doing anything for the next four years we are still fucked. The debt and Iraq alone will have dire consequences. And of course Bush will just do even more arrogant and reckless things in the next 4 years.

the election results were as follows:
Bush 30%
Kerry 29%
None of the above 41%.

That 30% includes every single Evangelical so-called "Christian" of voting age in the country. Once the shit starts hitting the fan they will not be nearly enough to save the Republicans. I'd be surprised if there is another Repub president after Bush for at least a couple of decades. I just hope that country is still worth living in after Bush is done with it.

50. Definitely Jeb
He would have been the nominee in 2000 except for the unexpected loss to Lawton Childs in '94. The Bush family always had more expectation of Jeb than George, for obvious reasons.

As others have said, his stated intention not to run means squat. It's actually very smart, keeping the media focus off him and the (nightmare) possibility of 16 straight years of Bush.

Jeb probably locks up Florida, which otherwise should be a 50/50 state in 2008 if the state economy is more in line with the national economy, which was not the case this year, to our detriment. Ohio's economy, on the other hand, was much worse than average this year. If it mirrors the nation's level in 2008, Ohio will undoubtedly reclaim its tendency to be 2-4 points more red than the nation itself.

In short, the GOP would be moronic to bypass Jeb, especially for a bland southern senator.
