The heyday of the Democratic Party was when it had its two word slogans of its own:
Instead of "family values," it had "civil rights"
Instead of "smaller government," it had "strong government"
Instead of "low taxes," it had "safety net"
Now with reports tht the Repugs will be pushing their anti-gay amendment (see
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=967340&mesg_id=967340),
I think the Democrats might be forced to return to their core values, and champion civil rights. If Dems try to minimize the fight against the amendment, they'll alienate everyone for being disloyal and weak. The Dems will have to stand up to the Right, and make the case for a fairer society.
If that happens, the Dems could pull in millions of new voters, especially if they champion civil rights for all. Many people have been discriminated against by the Repugs, including the poor, people of color, gays, and single women.
