Poll question: Do you want to nominate a Senator to run for president in 2008?

There's lots of talk on this forum about Obama or Hillary running for president in 2008.

The last sitting Senator to win a presidential election: JFK, running against Nixon, in 1960. He served until he was assasinated in 1963.

On the other hand, 4 of the last 5 presidents were Governors. Generals fare well in elections, when they run (Eisenhower, Grant, Washington). Even past status as a Representative seems to have a greater correlation with winning the presidency than does senatorial experience.

Do you want a sitting Senator at the top of the ticket in 2008?

He's awesome. He's a populist. He's an awesomely popular Senator in North Dakota.

4. 1914 was first year we had direct election of all senators running.

We have less than 100 years of history of Senators having been elected by voters and not state legislatures. I suspect that Senators are going to catch up to Representatives and Generals and governors.

6. From all names I've seen floated,

we're looking at moderate-to-liberal on the potential nominee ideology scale.

So I'm primarily looking at the Electoral Map. Who can deliver a state or two (while holding the 264EV in Gore/Kerry states)?

The same goes for a VP nominee as far as I'm concerned. If the VP nom has a pulse, it then goes to the next consideration: who can deliver a red state?

From Bayh to Kucinich, we can pretty much conclude that Supreme Court nominees will most likely be on the liberal end of things. Solidifying our standing on the high court should be of utmost importance.
