Gonzales is UNACCEPTABLE!
Well, I've had enough of the post-election angst and re-criminations and (since this discussion is unnamed) perhaps a call to arms is in order.

It's time to get back in the fight. The WaPo reports Bush is nominating Gonzales for Attorney General.

Unacceptable. Gonzales was the White House apologist for the indiscriminate torture of prisoners of war.

I've expressed my objections to my Senators and to my hometown paper.
I suggest you do the same.

I added some Gonzales background info at the very bottom of the page, copied from DU, in case anyone needs it for letters.

8. Thanks for the reference
but it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down. Here's a key 'graph:

"President George Bush has repeatedly stated that military personnel dealing with Iraqis have been instructed to “stay within US law” and to abide by US “international treaty obligations”. However, on Aug. 1, 2002, his chief legal adviser, Alberto Gonzalez, who served on Bush's staff while he was governor of Texas, approved a memorandum which says otherwise. The memo argued that torturing Al Qaeda suspects held outside the US — at Bagram airbase in Afghanistan and at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba — “may be justified” and international conventions against torture “may be unconstitutional”. Since Gonzalez is Bush's senior legal adviser, the memo, which was passed onto the Justice Department, is seen as a binding document. The White House memo was the basis for a second, Pentagon, memo issued in March 2003 spelling out the rules for Iraq."

12. Bush appointees..
If you don't like Bush's right-wing appointees, then don't forget to urge Democrats and moderate Republicans to BLOCK any right-wing judicial appointees, even if they need to filibuster!

9. You are absolutely correct.
Better to fight a battle over a lifetime appointment than a 4 year one. We are the minority and this is not the right fight to have.

10. I pick this one
Think "torture" and "Attorney General" No question we've got to fight.

I'm not asking anyone to camp out in Lafayette Park for a week. Just take a minute or two and e-mail your freakin' Senators for crissake!

5. I just kind of think
why bother fighting? It needs to get worse before it gets better. We ain't hit rock bottom yet because the Democrats keep protecting the Republicans from themselves. Let him appoint his neo-nazi AG, let the country see the folly of their ways.

6. the media
In light of this appointment, the media should cough up (or leak) the prison torture photos it refused to publish.

11. See how many times they refer to him as "Hispanic"
If so, the common narrative in the press should be:

Caucaisian President Bush nominated Hispanic Gonzales for Attorney General, usually taken up by Caucasian males.

QUESTION
So the same person who acts as the president's lawyer and with whom he consulted over the Valerie Plame case is the same person who will now be in charge of the Valerie Plame case?

Remember when those Democratic strategy files were hacked from the Senate computers? From Josh Marshall in February 2004:

15. Yes, but he is going to be the new AG anyway
Face it. We got creamed, and now bushco gets to ass-rape us.

You're going to see a lot more of this behavior as bush's 2nd term enters the "legacy" phase.

16. I don't think this is the right battle either. He's better than Ashcroft!
I know he wrote those memos about the Geneva convention, but he also upheld an appeals court ruling that over-ruled the parental notification laws in TX.

What do you expect in any nominee from shrub? He's going to nominate people who support his views, not ours. We would accept nothing less from our Dem President.

This guy is much better than Ashcroft was, and it is only a 4 year position.

I agree with those who say pick your fights and this isn't one of them.

17. I find it hard to believe that ANYONE with family in combat would EVER
consider Gonzales "OK" or "better than Ashcroft," etc. Man, I despise Ashcroft, and I hate him more than I can express at the moment, but the precedent Gonzales and Bush have set puts my FAMILY in extreme danger, especially if captured.

Gonzales is unacceptable.
