GROUP SUGGESTION: Democratic Minority Party Strategy Forum
Edited on Fri Nov-12-04 05:31 PM by rabid_nerd
This Forum would be a place for those who are in:

  • A Red State

  • A Red County/District/Area

to discuss strategy and races in order to increase the footprint of the Democratic Party nationwide.

Strategy for the Democratic Party where they are the minority party is unique to that where they are a majority party in that:

  • To win, you must still receive 50% + 1, which means garnering Republican Votes

  • Having said the above, it frequently requires supporting and recruiting candidates (including those of us) who do not pass the strictest of litmus tests and walk on eggshells elsewhere on DU

This Forum would apply to races of any level from local council-to-county strategy to selling an "unpopular" national/state-wide Democrat to the locals.

1. Actually, we're a minority nationwide.
So wouldn't all of us be eligible?

2. Yes and no...

There is no nationwide election..

That said.

In Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and surrounding areas of Pennsylvania, it's easier to be elected a county commissioner just by running as a Democrat.

Outside those areas of PA, you win just by being a Republican.

3. I would argue that step #1 for the Dems is to figure out a national
message and then work on the local stuff.

4. And I would argue that you are completely wrong
and that the whole problem is that we don't have the local offices across the country.

All politics is local.

The national message means bunk.

5. The Republicans have a national message, and they kicked the living
shit out of us. We are completely out of power.

Our local infrastructure is weak. What we need to do is have our grassroots decide the direction of the party.

But, we can't be 4-5 different regional parties. We need a core message, not a different one for Ohio than in Arizona, etc.

6. We're saying the same thing
but a different way...

We will not have a core message in 05, no matter who is DNC chair. And no matter what it is, it probably won't work here.

Or most areas that are Freeperville.

Just like the Republican national message doesn't work in California.

THAT is what I'm getting at.

A strategy board for those who want to build where the national platform DOESN'T WORK.

8. More or less a forum that would become...
"Getting (preferably palatable) Democrats Elected in Freeperville for Dummies"

9. First post in DU!
Well, remember those days when it didn't matter if you were Liberal or Conservative? Back in those days, it was clear that the Democrats stood for the little guy and the repukes stood for the big guy. There are more little guys than big guys. How else did FDR get in for 16 years? However, we've lost touch with this. If we can get back to the good old days, It'll be a breeze defeating the freepers.

10. I understand all the message points
but I am talking about strategy - the REAL problem in freeperville is that frequently we can't get the message OUT.

We lack the resources.

Locally, we got over 7,000 with $4,000 and a lot of walking, but it wasn't even 30% of the vote. BUT that was against triple that amount of money and double the base.

I know we have the message, but we're doing it on B & W from Staples on the cheap, which means we can't fit much on it. Which means you can't get much message out there.

11. As a Dem from a Dem state (NY) and a Dem city (NYC),
but a Repuke neighborhood (my congressman is a Republican, and my district often votes repuke) I would be interested in such a forum.

:kick:

This would be different from 2006/2008 and Southern forums.

It would be for all rural county/neighborhood democrats as well

10 star/donor DUers are required.
