I told you so..It's Arnold, Arnold , Arnold....
We should have nipped this **** in the bud. Months before the Gropinator took the Governorship away from Gray Davis in my home state, I wrote an article for DU about the recall effort. It was mildly hysterical, and titled something like "Wake up, Democrats! The Repukes are about to steal California!" It wasn't published by DU, and at the time, the issue was almost totally ignored on this board. I wasn't a posting member then, but a dreaded lurker. For some reason, I hesitated to join up and post about this topic. I got angry, and stayed away from DU for awhile.

Well... he's BACK!!! He's on my welcome screen today (ugly guy, isn't he? That face, and dyed hair...) on AOL. The powers that be are pushing him for preznit. The media's falling into line...big surprise, huh? The little matter of the constitutional provision requiring a candidate to be born in the US is already deemed to be of no importance. They will push him until 2008. I guess the question is... will we roll over this time?:puke:

He approval rating last time I checked was in the 70s.

He's supported some things I disagree with, but also some things I do agree with.

He has been somewhat successful in getting Republicans and Democrats to work together, which never happened with Gray Davis.

He's a bright guy, and does have better leadership qualities than the democrat he replaced, in the opinion of most Californians, including mine.

That isn't to say I like the guy. I think he is very probably still a sexist pig. Maria Shriver must see something in him though.

Nobody's perfect, right?

Better than Gray Davis... if I wanted to hear someone setting a lower standard for leadership, I'd listen to Fox News. It's of course harmless to give Schwarzenneggar his due for when he does something right. But that still requires us to raise a stink whenever he or any other Republican does something bad.

Arnold sought the Governship after a millionaire got the ball rolling only to bow out as Arnold came in after the recall. Notice how the recall fad has abated since the Muscle Head got in. Does this stuff happen by accident? I fear the planning by the Overlords is so far and deep that we don't know anything until it way too late.

And with all the talent in liberal Hollywood, it shouldn't be difficult. And it should be someone with a clean background and respect for women to contrast with the Gropinator. One thing to keep in mind: even with the star power, the media won't push a lib celebrity. So he or she should be an even bigger star that the groper.

33. Two Dems are gonna try
They are State Treasurer Phil Angelides and Attorney General Bill Lockyer. Lockyer said he actually voted for Arnold in the recall election, and since Arnold has such high approvals right now, it'll be hard for him to rationalize running against him in 2006. Angelides started positioning himself for the governorship since before the recall, but at this point he would lose to Arnold is a landslide. The only California Pol who could stand a chance is possibly Dianne Feinstein.

He could slide right in and provide exactly what Georgie provides, albeit in a different style.

All they have to do is push up against that constitutional provision, the type of popular support that movement gets would be a good indicator of what Arnold's election chances might be. If the numbers look good, they could take on the provision.

has already "helpfully" pointed out that this would allow some Dems to run, too. The example given is Jennifer Granholm. This is an obvious effort to make it appear that the exception is not partisan and intended only for Arnold. Unless someone starts squawking, they'll get away with it too.

15. Arnold will never get the Republican nomination
Look, I understand people are freaked out. But even if the Arnold amendment passes, we're the likely beneficiaries with people like Jennifer Granholm.

Do you really think James Dobson's going to accept Arnold? Arnold's only opportunity would be 2008 or maybe 2012 - after that he's too old. And there's no way the religious right gives up its hold on power that early. Maybe if Arnold were still around 20 years from now, but not anytime soon.

Honestly, if the amendment passes, I think the Republican that would benefit most would be Mel Martinez, who could wind up on a Republican ticket as soon as '08.

Fundies weren't happy with Arnold in '02. They ran an alternate candidate - the far-right Tom McClintock who took nearly 20% of the recall vote.

You're free to think differently, but I firmly believe that Arnold will never be accepted by the Christian Right. Arnold may try, but he's not gonna get it.

31. I Have a Difficult Time Thinking That 3/4 of The States Would Approve!
There are basically two conditions under which an amendment to the Constitution are defined.

1. Two thirds of BOTH houses of Congress need to approve any given amendment.

OR

2. “on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments” (this option has never occurred in the process of ratifying any of the 27 Amendments to the Constitution)

AFTER, either condition 1 or 2 has been met then:

Such an Amendment would require that: “the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths” of the states would vote to ratify such an Amendment. At this current time, that would require 37.5 (38) states to vote for an Amendment for Schwarzenegger to be eligible. There was a question in 1964 when Barry Goldwater ran for President regarding his Constitutional qualifications. At the time he was born in Arizona it was a Territory of the US. There are other Constitutional time restraints, but, since I am not a Constitutional Lawyer, I will leave that to those with much more expertise than I have as a lay person in that field.

The United States Constitution: http://www.usconstitution.net/const.html#A2Sec1

Article II. - The Executive Branch
Section 1 - The President

“No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.”

Article V. - Amendment

The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress; Provided that no Amendment which may be made prior to the Year One thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any Manner affect the first and fourth Clauses in the Ninth Section of the first Article; and that no State, without its Consent, shall be deprived of its equal Suffrage in the Senate.

34. It doesnt matter
Setting aside the fact that 38 states would have to ratify any changes to the constitution for a moment do you think even for one second that a liberal republican has even a remote chance to win the Republican primaries?

These guys like Guliani and Arnold and McCain are deluding themselves. The voters that come out in Rep primaries are way way way to the right and take it very seriously. McCain was begging independants and Democrats to come and vote for him in the states that allowed that, thats how desperate he became. Then he starting calling the Republican base/establishment the "death star" LOL...So I can not see a guy (Arnold) who is even more to the left on social issues then McCain is having any chance at all.

Arnold has no chance to get nominated by his own party

Most Californians do, including most democrats. However, I really don't see him making a presidential run. It would take a long time to get an ammendment through so many states.

Even if he did become president, he wouldn't be as bad as Bush (not that I would vote for him over the democrat).

53. I was right on each of those.
In 80 I knew that Carter was toast, months before the elections. All that was needed was to look at the voting patterns of the states.

I knew that Bush wasn't dumb. AWOL maybe, but unproven. You can't be stupid and fly a supersonic fighter. By looking at the voting patterns of the states I concluded that Bush would likely beat Gore.

I have posted here on DU, before the elections, that I was not confident of a Kerry win.

When many were posting that Bush would not agree to debates, I said he would. When they said he would not show, I said that he would show up for all three. Many claimed there would be martial law before the elections, I said it would not. I was right.

So I have a rather good record of being right.

Any thirteen states can block an amendment. It takes 37 states to pass one. There were more than 13 blue states. Lots of RWs will be against amending the constitution, even for Arnold, so it won't be just Dems vs. Reps.

So drop the hysteria. It won't even make it out of the House.
