Sugar, sugar

U.S. Rep. Dick Gephardt of Missouri swept through Florida this week scooping up money for his presidential campaign.

He started in Orlando, at a breakfast Wednesday hosted by attorney Richard Swann at the Citrus Club. He went on to Palm Beach, where a sugar baron who had sweetened Florida Sen. Bob Graham's campaign until Graham dropped out of the race served up lunch:

Alfy Fanjul of Florida Crystals and Bob Coker, executive and lobbyist for U.S. Sugar, hosted the Gephardt lunch in West Palm Beach.

Gephardt swept through a Broward County reception hosted by union leaders and moved on to Miami on Thursday for lunch and a reception hosted by lawyers there -- including one aboard a yacht in Miami Beach.

Neither Gephardt, or any other Democrat, ought to be collecting money from the Florida sugar barons, the Faneuils. We need to get special interest money such as this out of campaign system.
