Nancy Pelosi: If this is the best you can do, Dems are screwed
Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 09:31 PM by NightOwwl
*Disclaimers: I don’t usually swear this much, but I am really pissed off right now. “We” refers to the party in general, not DUer’s

So, here we go again…starting right off with the haughty, holier than thou, and yes, elitist attitude.

As I’m sure you are all aware, Republicans are changing their rules to allow Tom Delay, an indicted criminal, to remain in his leadership role. And if that’s not bad enough, this is a law THEY adopted in 1993 to use Democrat’s “ethical lapses” as a reason to end their control of the House.

So what is Nancy Pelosi’s response? Does she ream them a new one? Does she attack their repugnant, immoral behavior? Of course not, what was I thinking? For a minute there I thought we had learned something from this election and grown some balls.

"If Republicans believe that an indicted member should be allowed to hold a top leadership position in the House of Representatives, their arrogance is astonishing."

"To change their own rules to allow someone indicted for a felony to serve as a top Republican leader is completely unacceptable."

Give me a fucking break. I can practically see her little nose stuck up in the air as she “lectures" these big, bad Republicans. For gods sake, wake up! We have been hearing 24/7 they are the party of moral values. Now they are changing (their own) rule to let an indicted criminal retain his leadership position.

“During the closed debate that spanned four hours, with breaks, someone even questioned whether a leader charged with murder could retain his or her post, according to a House aide who was present. Such questions would be handled in the case-by-case review.”

A murderer? Oh sure, we’ll just consider stuff like that on a case-by-case basis. And all our leadership can come up with is "their arrogance is astonishing" and "completely unnaceptable." Woop-de-fucking-doo. Can we see some real anger and disgust please? This schoolmarm bullshit is not going to cut it.

The Republican party is filled with some of the most immoral people on this planet and this should be our mantra: Expose their weakness (immorality) by attacking their perceived strength (morality.)

We fucked up when we didn’t use the Pet goat video. Let’s not fuck up again.

3. Pelosi jumped on this more that I thought she would.
She can't really say all that much about it, the Dems don't have a rule that says THEIR indicted party leaders will step down.

7. Pelosi isn't that bad
and she's certainly better than that Texass pig, DeLay.

I say give more time and let the right-wing fuckwads hang themselves, as they surely will.

The rules change was anticipated. It's just going to be more fun to say that the Republican House Speaker is carrying on business from a jail cell, just like John Gotti did!

19. They might very well hang themselves...
and seeing that the "religious" wackos are coming home to roost it seems likely they will. But that doesn't absolve our leadership of responsibility. I'm really sick of their attempts to straddle the fence in order "not to offend." Bunch of cowards.

8. Pelosi is frightened she may go to far and hurt her chances at
lobbyist money. She is not shocked or outraged but is just putting up a false front in order to stave off criticism of the Progressives in the party. But she cannot say too much against DeLay or he will have the lobbyists stop the flow of money to Pelosi's pockets.

10. I'm ashamed to call myself a Democrat at this point.
The party leaders are gutless, inept and clueless. They present zero outward strength and are looked upon as neutered political weaklings. Being led by the likes of Pelosi and "i'd rather dance then fight" Reid will be the nail in our coffin.

Major changes are needed and needed fast!

14. What's that line from Annie Hall?
"A relationship, I think, is like a shark. You know? It has to constantly move forward or it dies. And I think what we got on our hands is a dead shark."

Our party leaders had better start moving before they drag all of us down with them.

25. All Politics Is Local
Its a cliche but its a true one. Everyone that is able on this board and all the others need to be doing something on a local level to make changes where it counts.

Nationally, we do what we do best. But kick it up a notch and keep the pressure on the media to cover what we do. Peaceful Protest. Many of the principles of Satyagraha. Make a noise. Make a stink. Let the GOP know that we ain't going away and we ain't going to accept what's in their bag of bullshit tricks. Write the Networks. Picket your local stations. Write the newspaper....I've got one of the worst right here in Indianapolis and they are going to be sick of my ass. Do all this stuff till you can't do it anymore. Cities of Progressives reach out to other ones that aren't doing so well, hell, adopt a Red State area and work with them. There are loads of things we can should and will DO!!!

We just cannot wait for the Democratic Leadership to tell us what to do or show us how. They are in it for their own asses. Not ours. And its our asses that are in a sling right now.

So....are we going to wait for Pelosi and Reid to make change? BE THE PARTY YOU WANT TO BE. NOW. EVERYDAY.

30. I just sent moveon.org the following:
I am sending a link to a post I made today on the DemocraticUnderground forum. It is reflective of many of the forum member's feelings. We believe the Democratic leadership is weak, ineffectual and spineless. It is time stop mincing around. It is time to stop trying to please everyone. It is time to publicly state that the Republicans are lying hypocrites whose actions fly in the face of their so-called moral values. The Republicans call us Christ-haters, traitors and terrorists. Our response should be to call them fascists. Some may think that is too extreme, but unlike their name-calling, we are telling the truth. Here’s a suggestion; you should have someone monitor DemocraticUnderground.com on a regular basis. It's a good way to get a handle on the "wish list" of the party faithful. (link)

*************

Who knows, it might help.

16. I've seen better leadership from people here on DU
than from the so-called dem leaders. And my language and my mood has gotten really combative -- we need leadership that can fight.

The only way to get noticed (on the TV media & radio) is to come across as very strong and determined -- and very sure of the message.

The GOPigs are shit-heads -- but they are willing to out yell and talk over anyone to get their message over.

Polite and "working together" is just plain stupid -- those bastard GOPig didn't play nice -- and they never have.

Anyway there are several folk here on DU who would make better leadership decisions --

Dem leaders come across as a bunch of wimps.

There are many of us at DU who are very pissed -- how do we get through to the dem leaders how damned angry we are -- beside massively overloading them with email?? Or tell them to have a staffer read DU to get a sense of how PISSED off many dems/Independents/Progressives/Greens/etc are with their LACK of leadership.

I think I am going to change my name to -- New-Independent -- or DU-Independent -- 'cause I am DELUSIONAL to believe that the dems will EVER show a trace of spine (or balls/ovaries -- they can have a choice even).

35. It's easy to talk tough and sound like a leader
when they're sitting at home on your ass typing diatribes into a computer.

Now, try it out in the real world of politics and let's see how well they do.

All of this armchair expert second-guessing is really making me sick. If the DUers who are so quick to attack the people who have actually put themselves on the line to go into public service think they can do a better job, why aren't they out running for office? Since they're so all-fired sure they are vastly superior in intellect, heart, courage and political strategy, they should get their asses in gear and get into the game.

Otherwise, it's little more than hot air from a bunch of know-it-alls.

17. I Think Nancy Is One Of The Best We've Got...
She is much better than Gephart...I agree she's not good enough but I think her heart is in the right place...Simply ranting about it isn't going to do anything, in my opinion....

She pointed out that the first thing they did was lower their ethical standards...

22. There is a difference between ranting and justifiable anger.
What the Repugs did was disgusting. What they did was immoral, and it flies in the face of everything they say they stand for. They are not the party of moral values, they are the party of liars and hypocrites. That's not a rant, it's stating the facts.

20. My guess is that this is a tactical
roll-over. Pelosi is no ween IMO. :) The beauty of it is that the arrogance of the repubes now is going to eat this up. Since they're gluttons they'll gorge on the people who in a short-tim will revolt, rise up and depose them.

If the dems resist much now it will only slow down the inevitable regime-change that we hope for. Let's feed their hubris until they explode!!!

On the other hand, the dems may have already committed themselves to the DLC (repube-lite) course, and we're seeing Nancy do her new schill routine.

BTW, am I still allowed here since I re-registered as a green today?

"If Republicans believe that an indicted member should be allowed to hold a top leadership position in the House of Representatives, their arrogance is astonishing."

"To change their own rules to allow someone indicted for a felony to serve as a top Republican leader is completely unacceptable."

I'm definitely not a defender of milquetoast Dems.

But I don't understand why her statements are weak? She called the republicans "arrogant" and said their actions are "unacceptable."

WTF do you expect her to say?

she can't start swearing into the microphone. But effectively she did say those things you wanted her to say.

She could have done worse...

She could have said "I have no comment on how they conduct their caucus, it's their business." thats probably what daschle would have said.
