The Democratic party isn't what it was 40 years ago
and I think that's a GOOD thing! I have seen so many say "the Dem party this and the Dem party that and I'm leaving the Dem party...blah, blah, blah..." and it's so ridiculous. The Democratic party goes way back to a time when abortion and civil rights didn't exist. In fact, it wasn't until a few years after abortion was legalized that the Dem party begin to see the "split" to the Repub party that everyone talks about now.

I asked my 84 year old Democratic "conservative" southern baptist mother why she continued to vote for Democrats and why she loved Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and supported John Kerry so ferociously this year. Her answer: because her dad--a rabid Democrat--said that there has to be a party to support the poor and working class people. He said that the republicans looked out for their "riches" and no one else...smart words and strong wisdom.

As I see the Democratic party shift and sway with the "moral" issue, the abortion issue, the working class issue, etc., I see an emerging progressive party that does indeed shield a huge crowd with it's awesome tent. What's happening under this tent is that young and old want it THEIR way--a way that still exists, but only through the eyes of their selfish desires.

Common ground is only met through compromise and understanding, something my 84 year old mother has done--thank-God--'cause without her and her generation to stand behind the working man, there would be no Democratic party. Compromise and wisdom is the key to understanding the depth of how far this party can go

7. So answer me this....
what happens when your mothers generation passes on? I see more and more middle aged voters passing over to the right, and those to whom no party is giving a voice staying home. The party at the moment is trying to stifle the progressive populist voices. It saddens me.

4. I hear you...
...but DU is a poor audience for this message.

The strength of the Democratic Party is its dedication to helping people and the willingness of all of us to put aside ideological differences for the common good.

We are Party that grows and changes over time. We are willing to compromise because we know what's most important is not winning every special interest and we know that there is little use for martyrs to a cause. We know that the most important thing is to make the lives of each and every American better.

That's why we have been winning for the past 40 years and why we will continue moving the country toward tolerance and liberalism over the next 400 years...

5. People do tend to vote with their own
interests in mind when they vote.

When people vote for a Republican candidate they are voting with their wallets in mind if they're rich. Less educated people tend to vote Republican because of "moral values."

Why do they vote against their own interests? Abortion, gays and religious bigotry. I will never understand that mind-set.

6. selfish desires?
We become more Republican everyday. Bound increasingly by corporate contributions, the AMA, and this tax-cut fever which is bankrupting America. Those who oppose the war in Iraq, have no healthcare, or have been unemployed are not represented in this party.

blessed are they which are prosecuted for righteousness' sake for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
