The Christian Right Way - How they love women - let us count the ways
We restrict your right to conceive;

Conceive and you must give birth;

Give birth and die for all we care.

Just makes you want to run out and praise Jesus, doesn't it?

3. And after I conceive and give birth, it is my duty and my job to stay at
home and take care of those children. It is my job to be content with what one income will provide and make do with it the best I can. No job for me. That would be shirking my duty to my husband and my children.

I was actually told this in one of my college classes the other night.

5. One income?
In this country?

Barefoot and pregnant. That's how they want 'em. Barefoot - not because the feet swell but because they can't afford shoes!

I hate these people.

6. Yes, that's pretty much it.
I don't hate them. But, I definitely disagree with their views. I have worked all my life. I am happy when I am working. I am NOT happy staying at home. I tried that for a couple of years after I got married. It was awful - boring, no one to talk to, etc.

I stayed at home again for five months after I had my son in 1995. God, it was terrible. Not that I didn't love taking care of my son. But, I thought I would go crazy waiting for my daughter and my hubby to get home so I would have someone to talk to.

Those same people who were saying it is the wife's job to stay at home with the kids then went on the lament about how hard it is to make it on one income.

I let my mouth run away with itself that night and it was very awkward after that. 21 years ago, I was so poor that people gave me clothes. One even gave me $20 one day and said she thought I could use it more than the church. I chose to help myself out of poverty by getting an education and contributing to my family's income. I feel that if my husband can't do it alone, it is my job to help him.
And I thoroughly enjoy doing it. I cannot imagine not working.

But, that's just my opinion. But, the same ones who have the "moral values" agenda will start harping on women working outside the home. I see it coming.

12. Yes, there's that "LITTLE" thing too.
Yet another reason why I chose (and continue to choose) to be a working woman. I haven't really thought about that reason in a long time but, way back when, it was in the equation too.

18. yep--I have a fundy relative who has been left by her hubby of more than
30 years. They had the same "deal"--she stays at home, home schools the kids, runs the house; he brings in one modest income. Despite years of conflicts, I still don't think she sees what's ahead. All she feels is anger at him for breaking their deal. It's a very risky thing to be the stay at home partner.

14. Problem is barefoot and pregnant doesn't work so well on a mid-life resume
Of course, that's the issue. If she is powerless to support herself in the case of divorce, then she knows that she has to put up with all kinds of shit. It's about the power.

Trust me, there are a lot of us over here in blue who don't remotely think that way.

19. Err...
I would be surprised if the these attitudes weren't shared by Christ and his disciples. If they weren't, then they would be more or less unique among pre-1800 humanity, wouldn't they? And aren't there some fairly objectionable commandments from St Paul on this subject in the Bible? (not a purely rhetorical question - I think there are, but I'm not certain: can anyone deny this or quote me chapter and verse?).

If you define Christian as "our best guess at what Christ belived", I think that these attitudes are probably genuinely Christian, at least if you believe that St Paul was inspired.

16. And for the far right
Don't cut your hair
Don't wear pants
Don't talk back
Don't wear makeup
Don't work outside the home
Don't question your husbands decisions, he is the head of the household. It doesn't matter if he's a totally ignorant moron or not.
Don't say anything if your husband smacks you around, after all, you have it coming.
Keep the house spotless and the kids clean at all times.
And if you could walk a few steps behind your husband, that would be great.
This is what the bible says, don't question it...ever.
