if McCain runs in 2008, is there any Democrat that can beat him ?

while i think he might have problems in the primary and there is no way to know for sure if he runs he can win the primary.

i'm asking this question with the assumption that McCain does/will become the 2008 Republican Nominee. so is there any democratic candidate that can beat him ?

They don't use privatized ballot black boxes in Great Britain and Canada now do they. Both of those countries still manage to elect officials and get proper results in a timely manner.

I think the only thing that would stop McCain from winning, given his "Maverick Statesman" image, IF he got the Republican nomination, is one of two things. A general economic meltdown that would strongly boost Democratic chances, or concerns about McCain's health and overall vitality, which is possible since his aging is becoming more apparent.

McCain won't be nominated, even after all the whoring he's done lately. But that said, if he did get the nomination: The "old," non-whore McCain that a lot of Democrats once respected might have been able to win. The "new," toadying, Bush-hugging, party-line-toeing McCain theoretically can be defeated because if he keeps doing what he's doing, Democrats will mobilize against him with the same intensity as we mobilized against Bush. The problem isn't the voters, it's the voting. Unless something is done about BBV problems, any Republican they nominate will win, no matter what we do.

But i think Evan Bayh, Ed Rendell, or Wesley Clark could beat him.

get the nomination! The Pubs are very organized, and "follow the leader" when the party backs a candidate. I think this is one of the reasons we saw McCain supporting Shrub this year. Do you remember hearing the comments in the 2000 election, that said it wasn't McCain's turn? I do!!! If the Party decides it's his turn, he'll get the nomination. It also doesn't matter that there are a lot of you that despise him. There are a lot of voters who do like him because he still maintains that "straight talk" maantra, and is willing to fight against the extremists.

I think he would be a very difficult candidate to defeat!

Like it or not, McCain has a much more friendly, common man persona than Kerry has. We don't like it, but lots of people VOTE for the guy they like! Sometimes it's a smile, a tone of voice, you know...charisma. I realize we'd all like to think people pay attention to the issues, and what is best for them, but that just doesn't happen anymore.

Look, what is important is not this horserace crap, this "he said, she said" crap, but making America a better place for all, stopping the Robber barons from stripping America of its wealth. We have 50 miliion people without healthcare. Why not focus on the real problems instead of horserace minutiae?

Hey, if the GOP can cheat their way to an extra 5% or so, then maybe that will force the Democratic party to come up with some extra votes. Gosh, they might even have to cater to the that unwashed and uneducated 50% of the electorate that rarely votes because both parties are busy looking after the interests of the upper middle class and the upper class.

no...no difference at all in a fixed election..not when it comes to who will win...expaining that life is not fair in the usa..that the poor get poorer is not an answer to a system that does not work as a reason to believe in a system that does not work. Until the country is taken back in a way other than the continued faulty belief that elections do work, the continued head in the sand philosophy of continuing to believe in the system just contributes to the problems that you have mentioned.

WE'RE INVADING IRAN They can't even wait til the election is official to start getting us ready for it. They said when Germany started invading countries in WWII the public reaction was, "Well, I guess we're at war" They were too dazed and had accepted that they couldn't do anything to stop it. For whatever reasons they are liked by many, if not most Americans. They would win pretty easilly.

McCain has a chance of getting the nomination now that he kissed Bush's ass and made up with the right. I still don't think he'd have quite a devotion of the fundies that Bush has, but it wouldn't matter. He'd take independants by a big margin and a lot of democrats as well.

I also think Hagel would be tough to beat. He's thinkin of a run. Of course this is all only if the republicans would nominate a somewhat maverik senator.

since we're probably going to try and run a repub-lite candidate. Heck, Kerry courted McCain beyond reason offering him not only a vp slot but a cabinet position...I better get used to the new democratic party. Maybe I'll join my wife in voting for the Libertarians next time.

None. You KNOW there will be an enormous scandal. Other than the ones that already exist. Hopefully, it'll come by 2006, but if not, then we'll wait. I am convinced that "George W. Bush" will, in another ten years, evoke the same response as the name "Richard M. Nixon," and the GOP will be comatose for some time.
