Gotta love that Mara Liasson on NPR. Not!
Edited on Mon Jan-19-04 06:06 PM by AP
Talks about tonight's vote. Says turnout might set record, but it's still a tiny fraction of registered Democratic voters. So, even at its best, she's saying that it really isn't that democratic.

She called Dean, Gep and Kerry the strongest candidates in a comment about Kucinich and Edwards.

So, they're hedging bets at NPR. If Edwards wins it was because he made a deal to win an election that wasn't all that democratic to begin with.

2. Tell me how you would have reported these facts differently.
I didn't hear the bias you did, but I'm interested in what you think she should have said.

6. I wouldn't waste time pointing out turnout as % of reg'd voters.
And I wouldn't have called Gep, Kerry and Dean stronger than Edwards when Edwards has been in second place in several polls.

Perhaps I would have commented on the implications of the Edwards-K agreement. Eg, historical precedent? What do their supporters think.

And then I'd wrap up with a comment from an election official about what they're expecting.

10. That's reasonable.
I don't see the voter turn-out as a waste of time, however. I find it very interesting that so many people wave flags one day, complain about the state of things the next day, and don't participate at all on election (or caucus) day.

She wasn't reporting on the implications of the Edwards-Kucinich agreement. I'm interest in the historical precedent too, but that wasn't her story. She was just reporting what was going on, what had happened today. I didn't hear any derision cast on the agreement at all.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your view.

11. The turnout comment was to...
...suggest that this isn't a real election. It sets up the possiblity of discrediting it.

She was saying, even at its best, with high turnout, people aren't really interested, and, furthermore, we can't draw conclusions from the outcome.

12. I heard something different, I guess.
I heard that this year has the largest expected turnout since 1988. From which I inferred that it's a hot contest.

I don't recall anyone ever discounting the validity of an election based on voter turnout, unless they were prevented from going to the polls. Low turnout is an indictment of the lack of civic responsibility in this country. Perhaps we each bring our own biases to the story.

4. Iowa is about organization more than late polls.
Gephardt has the unions.

5. Despite right wing protests

Despite the howls from right wingers, NPR is probably the only "fair and balanced" media outlet in this nation. They have a good balance of hosts and reporters. A lot of NPR personnel are on Faux news. Of course, there is a lot of dislike for Diane Rhem on both sides of the aisle.

Unlike other news outlets, NPR stories last somewhat beyond the regular 15 seconds.

Of course, we all have to remember that it's good to be "challenged". I don't want to here Buzzflash or Opednews style coverage on NPR ever.

8. I wonder what the turnout for the GOP caucus
will be like. I wouldn't be expecting such a heavily democratic turnout for them either, Mara.

13. Real bias
I was driving home tonight after "All Things Considered" was over, so I turned on my local news radio which runs (oddly enough) AP network news.

In their report of the Iowa caucus they interviewed Jeb Bush, Tom DeLay and read a quote from Ed Gillespie.

The republicans don't even have a contest in Iowa, yet three nationally know republicans were featured in the story bashing our party.

I just found it especially interesting after our dialogue here tonight.
