Clinton to ABC News: It's payback time
Nov. 23, 2004 | President Clinton's prime-time interview with ABC on Nov. 18, in conjunction with the opening of the Clinton presidential library, was for the most part a feel-good, nostalgic affair, as Clinton looked back on his presidency with ABC anchor Peter Jennings. But Clinton flashed real irritation when Jennings suggested some historians thought that Clinton's presidency had lacked "moral authority," without mentioning its having been tarnished by independent counsel Kenneth Starr's multiple investigations.

"You don't want to go here, Peter," snapped Clinton, who proceeded to criticize the reporting of ABC News, in particular, in the 1990s. "Not after what you people did and the way you, your network, what you did with Kenneth Starr. The way your people repeated every little sleazy thing he leaked. No one has any idea what that's like."

In truth, Clinton's criticism of the media's overheated and often conspiratorial scandal coverage could be applied to a host of mainstream news operations. But it was fitting that the comment was directed at ABC, which occupied a unique role amid the seven-year, $70 million media feeding frenzy surrounding Starr's probes. At times ABC, led by reporter Jackie Judd and producer Chris Vlasto, seemed to act as the broadcast counterparts to the print reporters relying on news from the Office of the Independent Counsel -- making an early investment in the Whitewater story and determined to see it pay off.

14. Exactly
Their little liberal media bias thing is a myth and they know it, but it serves its purpose.

Ours isn't even MYTH but truth. I tell it to everyone I know, which is why I don't watch ANY news on TV or read the two dailies in my area. They all suck. True journalism is dead, they all got fat and lazy.

16. IMHO, media-bias is in the eye of the beholder
The liberal can always see the conservative slant which is definately out there, and the conservative can always see the liberal slant, which is also out there. People always seem to think that stories that they like are underreported, and stories that they don't like are overreported. I don't think the media gives a rats ass what any individual thinks is important. This used to be a good thing, when they would spend their time actually reporting news. Now they just report whatever will get them the most viewers. Unfortunately, many searching for actual information ending up wading through an hour of shit (sex-scandals, celebrity crap, and the "Trial of the Century" of the month) in order to get 5 minutes of useful information. Did anyone really care about Clinton's scandals because they felt this was important information? Does whatever Paris Hilton is doing this week really matter? Does it affect anyone's life (other than his) if Scott Peterson gets 30 years or the death penalty? Unfortunately, the only part of the news today that reliably presents information is the weather report, and even that isn't all that accurate.

15. Wow, that was good.
Everyone here should see "Hunting of the President" if you haven't already. As nasty as that little motherfucker Ken Starr was, Clinton showed UNBELIEVABLE restraint in that mp3 clip, in my opinion. I probably would've cracked Peter Jennings in the jaw...

9. It sure was! Did you see the way he squinted his eyes at Jennings
He SCOLDED him! I loved it! Clinton has played nicey-nice with the GOP far too long and they keep steam-rolling over him with their crap, but that night I saw a man who's had enough.

5. Yeah, right, sure ....
what is he going to do? Let's face it - 40% think the Big Dog is the greatest and there are 40% that think he is the anti-christ, and we just saw how the other 20% break on 11/2.

His there is only there here.

18. He can speak out all he wants ...
Edited on Wed Nov-24-04 11:17 AM by BOHICA06
but his gyrations of 1997 leave him without creditability on this subject with the majority of the citizenry.

And putting on notice implies having some scunion to level against the opposition if they don't toe the line.

He's only entertaining the choir on this one.

11. This reminds me of the Jon Stewart appearance on Crossfire
Stewart made the point that cable news basically exists to give a forum to the right wing to spread their propoganda. Bill Clinton made it clear that he feels the same way about ABC and probably lots of other "news" organizations.
