I say we run a celebrity for President in 2008.
Edited on Wed Nov-24-04 06:08 AM by TeddyKGB
1. It's not like the Republicans can say it's a preposterous idea.

2. Experience, competence, and a candidate's record have become so irrelevant, even George W. Bush can get elected. Twice, if you believe that sort of thing.

3. They're going to accuse our guy/girl of being "too liberal" anyway.

THE CANDIDATE (and like the Governor of Kaleefornya, he's already shown the American people he can defeat the terrorists):

He comes already equipped with an Ahnold-style campaign slogan:
"President Bush...get off my plane."

I'm only half-kidding. :scared:

1. What about
Paul Newman, I mean really isn't it time we had a co-Presidency with Paul and Joanne Woodward?

One good thing about that - decent salad dressing will be the law of the land.

2. Not Harrison... lets run BEN AFFLECK!
We'd have the youth vote in the bag!

Honestly would say he'd have a very good shot considering the voting public these days. Sad that this is the state of things in this country.

I hear he liked Alec Baldwin best, though. ;-)

5. Why not? The repukes are trying to figure out a way to run Anold
With a celebrity, you don't need to get name recognition. If they are as big as Harrison Ford or Michael Douglas who have played the President then they already look presidential.
How about Martin Sheen? He has been ours and Clinton's President since West Wing has been on the air.

He played the evil politician who was destined to destroy the world, remember?

And Michael Douglas can never be forgiven for Basic Instinct.

6. It would have to be someone like Harrison Ford.
Most celebrities would be CRUSHED. Harrison Ford might be the only one who would do half-way decently.

13. Could Tom Hanks run as Forrest Gump?
I'd love to see an open debate between Forrest Gump and Bush! Think of the possibilities, Gump would definately ask bush what that bulge was in his back, and ask him why he skipped his NG duties in the 70's.

21. The day after the election
my sister and I discussed this very idea and she suggested Tom Hanks. Since then, I've noticed that Michael Moore had the same idea though Hanks supposedly has said, "No way."

Yeah, everyone loves Tom. 'Twould be a shame to watch the GOP attack dogs tear him down.

26. Redford, Tom Hanks, Oprah... all seem possible.
This may be a great idea with the right candidate.

But - the candidate still has to pass some tests - private life tests (low on dirt and faithful during marriage) plus coherance on policy and a strong intelect, plus have really strong appeal, as a star, to voters.

31. Oprah!
I think Oprah could get a huge amount of women to vote for her, I mean she's got a whole Oprah army behind her. But I worry that her not being married and her vague stance on religion would make a lot of people shy away from her. Oh yeah, and the fact that people are sexist and racist.

Edited on Wed Nov-24-04 10:28 AM by demwing
This idea has some merit. These two actually have political sense and some gravitas. The only problem is that they are about 25-30 years out of their name-brand peak performance. Isn't Newman like 70 something?

On edit - Redford is 67 and Newman is 79. Damn, time flies.

Our politicians have the life WASHED OUT OF THEM in their careers of bureaucracy. What's needed is the mixture of charisma (FDR, JFK) and talking SENSE (or NO B.S.) HST, WJC and (brace, brace: ) LBJ. Can anybody look at Evan BAYH and see anything but a honed and polished totem pole?

Democratic celebrities are active parts of the decadent Hollywood culture, while Republican celebrities only had youthful indescretions while there.

23. I agree, we must run a Movie Star
I will back, Tom Hanks or Harrison Ford 100% for President.

I will state, Mr. Hanks or Mr. Ford make a political documentary on he's running for President of the United Sates in 2008, and have it to run in every movie theater in the United States starting in 2006.
And have him(s) to wear a pair of bluejeans, old farmer's hat or cap and show them at the breakfast table giving grace, and at each meal, going to church on Sunday and working the fields, cattle feed lots in Kansas, Colorado, etc., watching stock car races, and rodeos, and anything that the "idiots republicans" does, so the democrats can gain some edge here to win..

Now any one got a better idea?

39. Why does everyone call Clint a Republican?

He held an elected position as a Democrat.

He held a politically oppointed position under a Democrat from which he was immediately fired by a Republican.

He campaigns for Democrats, and NEVER for Republicans.

He supports progessive, environmental causes.

He donates (a little) money to Democrats and NONE to Republicans.

Odd behavior for a Republican.

has already claimed that movie, and that image of Harrison Ford, for Bush. He ran portions of that movie as if it were some sort of evidence that the Cowboy in Chief was in the right.

I understand they bogarted Clinton's favorite movie for that image. Maybe it is time to take it back.

Wanna bet?

They already complain about the "Hollywood elitists" -- even while supporting Arnold! These people are hypocrites to the bone, and will have absolutely no problem saying its "preposterous."

Not that I would mind....but a big problem is that a lot of these well-known celebrities have "histories," which could be a problem.

But if we found someone who was smart, knew what they were doing, and had a pretty clean past, sure.
