20. BROKAW IS
A Democrat!!! He's been one for a VERY VERY long Time! I know he didn't sound like one when he was with Girlyman Matthews, but truth be told... He's a New York Democrat. Major comparison to Bill Moyers!

38. He's an old school media reporter
He was there in the days when reportors were taught to show no bias, just report the news. He'll never tell, and you'll never find out.

36. I think his point was just as you can't conclude Dan Rather
is a Republican because he's from TX, you can't conclude Brokaw is a Republican because he's from SD.

8. I'd guess Republican, judging from his "Farewell Reel."
Edited on Wed Nov-24-04 12:13 PM by VolcanoJen
They've been showing it on MSNBC all morning, a collection of "highlights" from Brokaw's coverage of US Presidents.

The reel makes Carter look like a wimpy sweater-wearing do-nothing, and Clinton like a lecherous, ineffective creep. Bush #41 is made to look stately, while Reagan is nothing short of a saint -- no mention of that pesky Iran-Contra scandal. :eyes:

I'm nauseous.

I was curious which side he would come down on if he were to actually run.

14. Brokaw is a Democratic-leaning environmentalist.
He has probably wisely refrained from party affiliation, but keep an eye on what he does after his retirement. Even now he is cooking up some pro-environmental activities with some of his best friends.

Hate to be coy about this, but I have strong connections to some of those friends. If you want to know what kind of crowd he runs with, check out the December 2004 _Outside_ magazine.

Yvon Chouinard who founded Patagonia, one of the few environmentally friendly corporations. I have a hard time understanding how Chouinard can stand the sight of him after all Brokaw's done to help the RW.

I doubt he's a Republican.

The fact that he's retiring, & nobody knows his beliefs tells me on balance, he was fair.

He'd sell out his countrymen and his friends in a heartbeat- who cares what party he belongs to.

34. Democrat
His name was being kicked around a while for a possible running mate for Kerry. I saw a speech he gave here in VA a couple months ago (a week after Memogate) and he was *very* critical of the Bush administration. He decried the problems with the war, the rise of the fundies, the increasing muzzling of the media, and had some harsh words for the Swift Vets.

On the plus side, he said that a second Bush term could only get worse. He even hinted that he thinks a draft will be likely.

On the downside, he said a Kerry presidency wouldn't be much better, given the state of the electorate and the world Bush as created.

He told a funny Walter Cronkite cussing story ;-)

Tom has done his fair share to help racial equality, women's rights, the environment, etc. But he does make $10 mill a year, and knows who butters his toast. I suspect he rather appreciates the Bush tax plan. I also think he likes those Lear jet rides with the who's who of corporate America -- it is a long way from the praires of South Dakota, baby, and still a little intoxicating -- unless I miss my guess.

I also think he was really shaken by 9-11. Those planes hit just a little too close to home, or more specifically, to Rockefeller Center. I get the general impression Tom is all in favor of kicking some Arab ass, and isn't too particular just exactly which Arabs. I don't know this for a fact -- I'm just reading between the lines.

One thing for sure, it is beyond dispute that he dropped the ball in the lead-up to the Iraq war, and his coverage of the WMD story is the single biggest blot on his career record. I prefer to think he was willing to look the other way on WMD because he favored an aggressive response to 9-11, rather than the alternative explanation -- that he was simply courage impaired.
