Powell Says U.S. Cannot Accept Ukraine Vote Tally as Legitimate
By TERENCE NEILAN

Published: November 24, 2004

n a stern statement of Washington's position, Secretary of State Colin L. Powell said today that the United States could not accept as legitimate a declaration by Ukraine's Central Election Commission that Prime Minister Viktor F. Yanukovich was the winner in a presidential election denounced by the opposition as marked by mass fraud.

Mr. Powell, who said Sunday's election did not meet international standards, urged Ukraine to act "responsibly" to resolve what has become a political crisis that he said could even have consequences for the relationship between Washington and Kiev.

The secretary also called on Ukraine's government not to use violence against the demonstrators who opposed the result, tens of thousands of whom filled the main square in Kiev today for a third day.

3. In spite of my enthusiasm at the protests in Kiev
I was thinking this also -- kinda like the attempted Chavez coup in Venezuela.

5. It is an attempted coup by BushCo
see

Our taxpayer funded National Endowment for Democracy is behind the protests. The same way they have been behind the opposition in Venezuela.

Poor Ukraine, they are like a bone with BushCo biting into one end and Russia having hold of the other. Either way, Ukraine will belong to an oppressive regime when this election is decided.

4. How so?

It's a pretty interesting thing occurring over there right now. I find the administration's acute attention to this instance of vote fraud quite telling.

Anyhow, just wondering if I've missed a U.S. / Ukraine connection...

(on edit: thank you for the link).

7. see my post #5
basically we are funding the protest and Russia is holding on to dear life for their control.
from the link

Heavy external interference, similar to what occurred in Venezuela during the recent recall election, brought in similar groups: National Endowment for Democracy, International Republican Institute, National Democratic Institute, Konrad Adenauer Foundation ("Christian Democrat") and Friedrich Ebert Foundation ("Socialist") of Germany, European Peoples Party (the conservative Christian Democrats), all to mobilize Catholic Ukrainian ultural "nationalists" and the youth for Yushenko against Yanukovich

8. It's incredible for the everyday voter...
Whom do you vote for? The concept of a candidate is becoming irrelevant in modern day elections. Ukraine is a prime example - interdependence is its greatest weakness and probably its greatest strength as well. So, they truly vote for which foreign influence is most preferable.

For Putin/Russia: the man that wants to make your country a satellite of Russia, a man that owns a high percentage of the media, mobs in the pocket, etc.

or

For Bush/the West: the man who's policy is basically "when you start doing what we're telling you to do, we'll let you do that".

9. Also with both oppresive regimes you get privatization of state assets
The Ukrainians do not have it good under Putin right now, but it will not get any better under Bush and it could get worse. The Western corporates are very good at getting their hands on a country's assets. Putin is no slouch in that area, but the Westerners are very very good at it.

There will be rough times ahead for Ukraine either way.
