OMG- Nevada DUer wins election in Repug Territory and makes news!
Edited on Wed Nov-24-04 04:04 PM by FrenchieCat
This DUer goes by the name of Nashyra, and has been a member of DU since 2001. I had the pleasure of meeting her a couple of times (in SF and in NYC) during the Primaries and shortly thereafter. Her dad is a blast too. A very active and dignified veteran and gentleman.

She is walking the walk....and not just talking the talk.

Kudos for Cindy aka DUer "Nashyra"!
---------------------

Cindy Trigg, who recently won a seat on the Douglas County School Board, credits the retired Army general with getting her involved in public affairs.

“He inspired me,” said Trigg, a Clark campaign volunteer who went to New Hampshire early this year to help his Democratic presidential bid. “My involvement with the campaign led me to knowing what opportunities were there for me.”

“I got to hear his stump speech quite a few times, his speech on family values,” Trigg said. “His family values were education, good jobs — so parents would be able to afford health care. His family values speech was more or less giving back, doing for your community.”

Trigg’s work on behalf of Clark began in May 2003 as part of a presidential draft effort. She wrote letters and e-mails and made phone calls on his behalf. Eventually, she hit the Clark campaign trail along with her father, Ruben Olivas, of Fair Oaks, Calif.

9. And the story also reads...
“Gen. Clark was just real down to earth,” said Trigg, a cheerleading coach at Whittell High School in Stateline. “He was very personable and formidable.”

During the 2004 presidential campaign, Trigg learned that several offices were open in Northern Nevada, including Douglas County school district trustee.

“I realized I could do more if I took the time to do it,” she said.

Trigg defeated Lawrence Howell 54.3 percent to 45.7 percent on Nov. 2.

Her relationship with Clark came full circle when he visited Reno just three days before Election Day to campaign for Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

Trigg served as Clark’s driver in Reno.

??I was able to speak with him more one on one,” said Trigg, 50. “It really turned out to be a nice journey.”

A highlight, she said, was when they encountered campaign supporters of President Bush.

“The people came up to him (Clark) and told him how much they respected him,” Trigg said.

"Trigg defeated Lawrence Howell 54.3 percent to 45.7 percent on Nov. 2." Nice comfortable margin there.

16. My favorite part of that:

Go, Cindy! :toast:

18. And, here's Clark, thanking her in his Thanksgiving message:
But make no mistake, your efforts made a difference. In Colorado most visibly, where Ken Salazar's campaign got a decisive boost in his U.S. Senate race. But also elsewhere, in many other efforts up and down the ballot. For so many, this was your first effort in politics. Cindy Trigg was inspired to make her first run and won a seat on the Douglas County School Board in Nevada. Congratulations, Cindy! And to all of you who pushed and pulled in the great democratic process to help shape our country, congratulations and thanks!

21. This is how tides are turned-- one race at a time
It's the victories like this-- on a local level-- where REAL grassroots campaigns can change things. Congrats Cindy!

Remember, this is how the Religious Right did it in the early 80s: they won school board, county board and city council seats. From there they won state leg and congressional seats. This is EXACTLY the kind of inspiration that Dems need right now to get us on the road to victory!
