Do you still sport a political bumper sticker ? Ready for a new one?
I do.

I still have my Kerry/Edwards, Moveon.org "Defend America, Defeat Bush" and Ken Salazar (for Senate) bumper stickers.

When I see a "Don't blame me for this mess, I didn't vote for Bush!" sticker, I may peel the rest off and put that one on.

DU should market it! I'd buy one. Hear that Skinner? We need a new anti-Bush bumper sticker! I'll even design it for you (that's what I do) for free.

Anyone here old enough to remember those during the Nixon years? Just you wait. Although I was just a babe when Nixon resigned in disgrace, I remember my father joking that no one would admit to voting for him. I believe we'll witness the same memory hole after Bush.

Unfortunately, it will have to get a lot worse before it gets better. But if history is any guide, it will happen.

1. Saw a new one this evening...
"Dean/Obama '08"

I swear, I did a double-take. I was pretty happy to see it, if only for anecdotal proof that folks aren't giving up.

A co-worker said his neighbor sports one that says "In case of Rapture, can I borrow your car?"

So many possibilities...

3. Lots of people still have their Kerry stickers.
Edited on Thu Nov-25-04 12:03 AM by ocelot
I have replaced mine with "Don't Blame Me, I Worked For Kerry." The other one, which has been on my bumper for almost a year, says "If You Aren't Completely Appalled, Then You Haven't Been Paying Attention."

Nixon's resignation, which I remember quite clearly (still have the teevee I watched it on) was a high point in my life, politically speaking. It's quite true that after Nixon slunk off to California in '74 it got pretty hard to find people who would admit they voted for him. When the excrement impacts the airfoils this time -- and it will before much longer, I'm afraid -- the same thing will happen. "Bush, that idiot? Uh, no, I didn't vote for him." Riiight. But those cute little "W" stickers on those big ol' SUVs might start disappearing right about the time the new tax code goes into effect that eliminates the deduction for state and local taxes and the business deduction for health insurance...

4. I hope you all are right about the "Nixonization" of Bush.
Who is probably, at the end of the day, going to be more deserving of that treatment than the original Dick could ever possibly have been.

Still, it's scary that someone worse than Nixon showed up a scant 30 years later. Dang.

18. Indeed, by comparison
I've heard Repubs call Nixon a raging liberal and a pussy by comparison.

That quote from the Rolling Stone Hunter Thompson article touched me very much, the one where Nixon wrote in '83 that said if we really want peace, we need to find a way to take the profit out of war. You go, Dick. He was a better man when he wasn't in office. Office-holding must have pushed his paranoia button.

It was freaky this summer to see a picture of Nixon and Kerry just before Nixon died, shaking hands with big grins on their faces (though Kerry's grin looked part "WTF! Dig this!"). Kerry said Nixon was very knowledgeable in foreign policy. I thought it was big of Kerry to go and make peace with the man.

Read John Dean's "Worse than Watergate" to get an idea of how the current administration measure's up to ol' Tricky Dick.

26. Here's to hoping you are right as well Ocelot.
I do believe the economy will have to tank before people take notice, hitting the * supporter hard in their pocket book is the only way to get their attention at this point. I also believe we are very close to such a catastrophe, unfortunate that it will hurt everyone, especially those who can least afford it.

As to political stickers on my car, I still have the American Flag that my brother in law put on following 911, it is peeling and faded, and above it "Wars, Lies, Corporate Ties, Beat Bush in 2004" The week following the election someone defaced the latter sticker by writing on it "WON BIG". That came off with some Acetone, I refuse to remove the sticker, it is a statement that Bush will never be my President. I believe that is why I see all the Kerry/Edwards still.

20. THOSE are two bumper stickers I want for MY car.
I still have my "War is Not the Answer" taped to the inside of the back window. Where did you get your "Don't Blame Me" sticker?

I also want one of the "completely appalled" ones. I had a version of that which said "If you aren't outraged, you haven't been paying attention" but my daughter took that one and put it on her wall. I don't have the heart to take it back. I rather like that my kids are into this, too. In fact, I'm quite proud!

I've wondered, myself, when it gets SO unbearably bad that the tide actually starts turning again. I remember when you couldn't pay people to admit they'd voted for Nixon - when you knew (in your heart) they had. The Nixon era was pretty much when I started to become somewhat politically aware. It WAS a high point - when the good guys actually prevailed and people, both good guys AND bad guys, began to discover that crime did not pay. And journalists were journalists, and Bob Woodward was respectable and hadn't yet turned into a shameless whore. That fired up a LOT of us college kids, lemme tellya. I was one of many who decided I wanted to get into the news business after I graduated. The whole Watergate business just inspired the hell out of me, and sucked me straight in. Ahhh, those were the days.

In fact, we sat next to a British couple at a restaurant earlier today, and the guy assured me things would get better - reminded me of the cyclical nature of things. I told him I hoped he was correct but had a hard time believing it, because the pendulum just seemed to keep swinging farther and farther in the wrong way. He reminded me about Nixon and said people in Britain and elsewhere overseas understood what was going on, and sympathized with those of us among the 49 percent. He said they went through the same awful times during the 60s and 70s and that things change - that they did in the UK from there, and that they would, here, too. It was mildly comforting. He also said it was likely going to wind up being a good thing, because by the time things start going sour for bush and his buds, their fellow regressives were probably going to be set back for a generation. He kept repeating - "this will pass. This, too, will pass."

One can only hope...

Meanwhile - know where I can get those stickers?

Thanks in advance!

I've had HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of orders (many from DUers) and never had a complaint about anti-Dem flyers.

but, certainly shopowners using cafepress sell anti-bush and pro-bush stuff (along with thousands of totally non-political items). if cafepress was taking a political stance, I wouldn't be able to sell the anti-bush, anti-repub, etc. gear that I do.

You're Not Paying Attention." is www.northernsun.com (this site also carries magnetic backing for easy removal)

I rotate my stickers frequently. Right now I am using three:

"America, One Nation Under Fraud ", "Bush Lied, Thousands Died" and "Who Would Jesus Bomb?" Another favorite combination is:

"The Road to Hell is Paved with Republicans", "Never Have So Few Taken So Much From So Many For so Long and "If You're Not Outraged..."

A couple more good sites are: www.whitehouse.org and www.evolvefish.com (they carry Howard Zinn's statement "There Is No Flag Large Enough To Cover The Shame Of Killing Innocent People.")

When public schools are shacks.
