Guess what my Freeper brother did on Nov. 2
Voted for Kerry.

He just told me today at Thanksgiving dinner.

We were having the first political discussion since the big fight we had about a month before the election, when it became clear where he gets most of his news.

Well, he and I were talking about the Intelligence bill, and why our Congressman, Sennsenbrenner, was one of the ones to put the stop on it. He put a stop on it because it didn't address our porous borders and what should be done to tighten them up. This is a big concern with my brother, and is an issue I brought up during the campaign to him when he asked what Kerry's plans were that were different than Bush's

Then I asked my brother why Bush was fighting to pass the thing, then. His answer, "Because he's an idiot, that's why."

Which led naturally into, "But I thought you were going to vote for him."

"Nope."

"Nader, then? So you wouldn't have to vote for an incumbent?"

"Nope. I voted for your guy."

It was at this point that my chin dropped into my stuffing and gravy. He said he was tired and didn't care when he got to the polls, so he voted for Kerry. Sure dude. Sure. Now I know.

Kerry was the only Dem he voted for. He voted straight Repub below that. Kerry may be the only Dem my brother has EVER voted for.

Doesn't change a thing, but I am proud of him. Yes they CAN be taught.

3. Sure they can be taught.
I don't understand these people on here that are like aaaa no they can't be reasoned with they are completely brainwashed they have no logic and reason. I'm like...ok, what's their point? It sounds like they want one of two things:

1. To vent.
2. To start putting people in concentration camps or letting them starve to death.

I can understand #1 - after all, the Internet attracts people who like to sit down. But #2...moot point despite the hideousness of it. See my answer to #1.

4. I said all along that Bush had the stupid vote locked up
Sounds like your brother - like many conservatives - is a smart guy who figured out that Bush ISN'T REALLY A CONSERVATIVE. Bully for him!

It isn't just we liberals who have Bush pegged. The true conservatives I know wouldn't vote for Bush to be head of their local Solid Waste Department.

We know that the fundies and the wealthy voted for him in droves, but they weren't enough to get him over the top...it took a large number of apallingly amoral, hateful and stupid people to do that.

20. Absolutely!
I think that is why so many of us had Republican friends who voted for Kerry, and so many fundie neighbors, co-workers, and in some cases, family, who voted for Bush. You can't chose the latter categories - but we're intelligent when it comes to chosing friends ;)

9. I tried to shake his hand, but we were in a restaurant
so he declined.

It was just him and me this holiday, first Thanksgiving since dad died, so it was nice to not cook. His little bombshell was just icing on the cake.

10. Wow! Thanks for sharing...
I hope that what happened at your dinner is happening across the country. Checking in with people and getting clear about what really happened. Who voted for whom and why. I don't know about "Doesn't change a thing..." -- it changed how you felt about your brother, and it changed everyone at the table who heard him, and it will change everyone who reads this post.

I have been having somewhat similar experiences for the past few weeks - people keep surprising me with their reactions. On about half of the occasions when I work up the courage to mention 'vote fraud' I get people who roll their eyes at me and accuse me of being a conspiracy theorist, but on the other half of the occasions they join in instantly. Several people who don't quite believe me seem to be hoping I am right. A staff person in my department who husband is a construction worker and union member immediately responded with "Of course they stole the election! Everyone in the unions voted for Kerry - my husband, his friends, my sons - everyone." I just had Thanksgiving dinner with a friend of mine who lives her life with her Christian faith as central to who she is, and she explained to me in great detail why she sees Bush as the anti-Christ (her term, not mine). She voted for Kerry, her husband voted for Kerry. She thinks that her Christian friends who did vote for Bush are just not seeing him for who he is and she has and will continue to talk with them about this. Talking matters. Listening matters.

Every journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step...

13. I've had similar experiences
People here and there letting me know who the voted for. I'm a bit of a catalyst for such talk, since my picture was in the paper the day after the election. So they will say, "Saw your picture. Sorry about that. I voted for him too."

One of my bigger surprises was a farmer-stock, working class pressman at our printshop. He has been known to annoy me on occasion. He has an arrogant streak and every once in a while lets you know he's has a problem with minorities. He's also married with 2 kids and owns a house.

And he voted for Kerry.

11. Now that is something to be thankful for
this Thanksgiving. So this and all the stories about cons crossing over to vote for Kerry that we heard before the election makes it hard to see just how * got the popular vote doesn't it?

14. My father's very conservative Republican friend voted for Kerry.
Edited on Thu Nov-25-04 08:19 PM by ZombieNixon
He also voted to re-elect Tom Udall and voted Dem or Lib on everything except for one county commission race where even I think the Republican had integrity.

Why did he vote for Kerry? "I'm a conservative. Bush hasn't conserved anything." He went on to say that he's only staying a Republican so he can vote for Donald Duck in the 2008 Rep. primary.

I shit you not,

22. I don't believe that for a minute. Now way he came within
one state of losing and got 3.5 million more votes that Kerry. Since the Kerry states are the most heavily populated. No way.
