Can we put health insurance on the ballot?
Not necessarily a requirement that employers provide it, but alternative ideas like a state tax credit to employers. Or even a state insurance policy available to everyone at an affordable price, with funding included in the initiative? Work hard to avoid attacks that it is socialistic by requiring real premiums, with tax support for the high risk patients.

Make this a Democratic position, sort of the flip to the hate amendments.

Why can't this be done?

1. Better not, the dumb asses will vote against it and end it for the few who
happen to have health insurance.

I think we should put sex on the ballot. Yes we can have it and No we can't. Let's see how they vote. That'll fix the fuckers

2. great idea!
I think it can be done, but you'll need to write the amendment carefully. Consult local politicians and lawyers in your state. You'll have to prepare for opposition from insurance companies.
I agree that we start using the amendment process for progressive ends, just as the right as done to advance their agenda.
FL passed a raise in the minimum wage this year, by more than 70%.

3. You can, in some states.
There is no provision in the Constitution for national referendums, however.

4. Sure, it can be done on a state level
it's called an initiative
Never heard of an initiative on a fed level though

5. I am not willing to put anything on a ballot
until we fix the fucked up voting system we have now.

6. another point
Virtually all amendments on the ballot pass in FL. I think people have a tendency to vote yes to nearly everything. So however it's worded, make sure the response you want is yes.

7. I'll vote against health "insurance" without so much
as a reservation.

I'll vote for healthcare but I will not vote for health "insurance".

Health "insurance" rewards crooks.

9. good point on language
The language used to describe such provisions is essential. The Republicans were able to make their abolition of the estate tax a viable issue by simply calling it a "death tax." We Democrats need to pay careful attention to language.

8. It was attempted in Oregon, but the insurance industry massively
funded the opposition and filled the airwaves with scare stories about people flocking to Oregon for "mooch" off "taxpayer-funded" medical care.
