"Bush arrives in Canada for first stage of world charm offensive"

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/cpress/bush_cda

OTTAWA (CP) - U.S. President George W. Bush (news - web sites) swooped into town Tuesday for a whirlwind visit designed to begin mending international fences in the wake of the Iraq (news - web sites) war.

Bush landed at Ottawa airport aboard Air Force 1 and received a red carpet welcome from Gov. Gen. Adrienne Clarkson. Things were decidedly cooler downtown where protesters were gathering ahead of Bush's arrival on Parliament Hill for a meeting with Prime Minister Paul Martin.

Bush is in Canada for just over 24 hours to road test a message he will bring to Europe later about international co-operation in Iraq, Afghanistan (news - web sites) and other trouble spots.

Martin will push for progress on trade issues such as reopening the U.S. border to Canadian cattle and solving the softwood lumber dispute.

4. "Charm" offensive?
Like the American wehrmacht heading into Iraq without sufficient body armor (despite our spending a billion dollars a day on the military), Bush heads out for another "offensive" with inadequate materiel.

international co-operation in Iraq

The next thing you know, he'll be talking about the need to pass a "global test..."

8. "world charm offensive"?????
Do Bush's handlers believe this idiot can go on tour and stir up anything other than more animosity? Can they be that clueless? It's like sending Charlie Manson on tour to prove he's really an OK guy.

9. ...road test a message?
I'm sure the Canadians will appreciate that they are being used as a road test, especially after not being thanked for their hospitality after 9-11.

28. They're showing their appreciation
...by serving him "banned in the USA" Canadian beef.

The Canadians understand a thing or two about diplomacy, and they have been good friends to us for many, many years. It's important to listen to the wise counsel of good friends. Of course, we didn't listen to the French, so I doubt weecowboy will listen to any guff from our neighbors to the north. He wants it HIS way--I suspect he won't be so charming if he hits any roadblocks in his "offensive."

Online diary: A moment-by-moment account of the Bush visit
CBC News Online | November 30, 2004

CBC News Online's Ottawa journalist Paddy Moore reports by Blackberry and cameraphone from the streets of Ottawa on the sights and sounds of the Bush visit. Check back for updates throughout the day.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3:20 p.m. Turned back again

Once again the police say I can't get to where I want to go, despite the accreditation. Papers that were good enough to get me into a room with President Bush.

So, back past the buses for the tactical squad and I'll try to get closer from the Sussex Drive side.

I can hear a cheering crowd.

3:10 p.m. Protests get ugly

I'm bailing from the background briefing by senior Canadian officials.

I hear there' a bit of a confrontation between police and protesters outside the Chateau Laurier hotel, very close to Parliament Hill.

My assignment desk tells me the police are putting on their gas masks and an injured cop has been dragged away.

I'm downwind as I approach along Majors Hill Park.

17. Christmas decorations removed for Bush's visit
CBC just said that Parliament's decorations were quickly removed to put up US/Canadian flags for the visit.

The tree and decorations will go back up when he's gone.

20. Fearing Hecklers, Bush Skips Address at Canadian Parliament
DemocracyNow!
http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=04/11/30/1525230

President Bush is making his first official state visit to Canada today in an attempt to patch up relations with Ottawa which opposed the US invasion. Bush will be making stops in Ottawa and Halifax but the BBC reports he won't be addressing the Canadian Parliament because of the risk of being heckled by Canadian lawmakers.

after he stole the 2000 election?

He's like a crocodile. The time to watch him is when he's smiling. You'll meet your doom the moment you take your eyes off of him.

A more dispicable scrap of hair and bone I've never seen.
