Atrios:Democrats form "war room"
Good News

Except, um, you didn't actually have one before?

Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., the incoming Senate minority leader, said Monday he is forming a communications "war room" to promote Democrats' messages and respond to Republican criticism.

Reid continued to put his stamp on the Senate leadership when he announced creation of a Senate Democratic Communications Center that will aim to keep the party in the public eye. The center will be launched Jan. 4, when the Senate convenes for its 2005 session.

Jim Manley, press secretary for Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., has been hired as staff director for the center, which will be located in the U.S. Capitol.

Phil Singer, a former media adviser to Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., will be communications director, handling "rapid response" as Democrats seek to keep their messages on pace with the White House and Republicans in Congress. Singer also worked as national spokesman for the presidential campaign of Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.

A 15-member message team will include press aides who will publicize Democratic activities to Internet news organizations and bloggers, Reid said. Tessa Hafen, Reid's press secretary, will focus on Nevada media and regional news outlets.

2. Baby steps.
These people are, sad to say, political neophytes. They don't understand how the game is played these days. So any news like this is good news.

5. My initial impression is that the Kennedy guy got the job because of
the connection, but the Schumer guy got the job because he has skills.

Schumer has done a great job in the media. Whether you like him or not, he really has a knack for cutting to the chase, framing things in ways that people understand, and getting people to see things his way.

I find myself always saying, "yeaaaahhhhh" when I hear Schumer talk.

6. Combativeness and the 24 / 7 campaign ...
the following is an excerpt from my post of about a week ago ... it's nice to see that the Democratic Party is hanging on my every word ... you can read the full thread ==> right here ...

the topic within the thread was titled: Key Elements Needed to Regain a Democratic Majority

1. Combativeness:

Democrats got active this year ... a great sleeping giant has finally started to awaken ... we have a large active base from across the political spectrum ... it's not just lefties; it's not just DLC'ers ... we came together to fight as a team ... this energy needs to be sustained through the mid-term elections and on into 2008 ... the only way to do this is to give us a steady diet of red meat ... the last thing we need to see on our TV's is democrats enabling the neo-con agenda ... democrats need to fight against bush on each and every issue ... standing together "as Americans" is not what we want to hear while we're seeing America flushed down the toilet by the right-wing ... we need to see our team on the field 24/7 ...

<skip>

3. The Campaign:

the campaign needs to run 24/7 starting right now ... this really overlaps with the combativeness section above ... we need our guys on TV, radio, newspapers everyday ... they need to be a real opposition force ... they need to be both thoughtful and reasonable, but always combative ... everything, EVERYTHING, that bush is doing is wrong ... there is no longer any room for compromise ... we need to object to the neo-con agenda in the most forceful terms ... the status quo has got to go ... the status quo has been that republicans and their hundred media hitmen attack us everyday and we appear on TV, now and then, thoughtfully reflecting on policy ... this approach lacks passion and doesn't reach voters ... it conveys a lack of commitment to our beliefs ... it's wishy-washy ... to win the hearts and minds of voters, we need our spokespeople to be combative, confident, clear, sharp, consistent, articulate and forceful ... the campaign needs to be fought everyday in every media outlet ... waiting until elections roll around is not the way to win ...

8. Thom Hartmann: How to take back a stolen election
http://www.commondreams.org/views04/1129-26.htm

yeah, bypass the wimpy, scared, too-late-and-a-dollar-short leadership.

They should keep on with what they're doing though. We just have to get together in large crowds and make them!

9. "They should keep on with what they're doing though"
glad you added that line ... it makes no sense to oppose those making an effort even if we think the effort is far less than what is needed ...

maybe by taking this first stepand getting in the "real game", they'll gain a better understanding of what it takes to win ...

10. Hillary asked daschle to do that in 2000 - he poo-pooed it. Respond?
Why would the GOP even bother to attack the irrelevant Dems? Too little, too late, a8holes. Democracy flew the coup.

11. Why does this have to be done theough the senate?
Why can't it be done through the DNC, which, it seems to me, has more freedom? Or is it that the DNC doesn't want to be seen as taking policy positions and setting strategy?

12. DNC isn't really set up for that.
The DNC is primarily a fundraising organ. It really has never been any kind of message-coordinating entity. Because Dems are so diverse in there views and issue-orientations, the DNC would have had better luck herding cats than enforcing message discipline.

If Dean or Rosenberg get the chair, that may change. But the DNC's primary effort should be rebuilding the party at the grassroots level. It's going to be up to us to develop the Democratic Brand, I think.

14. The DNC has always tried to have a message operation, and at times
has had a very good one. For the last four or five years, though, it's been absolutely horrible.

15. The DNC is set up for that.
McAwful was showing off our brand new state of the art headquarters before the election. It has everything required for this operation and cost a lot of money to set up. I wondered during the campaign how much it was being used.

13. Jesus. Only in the Democratic party can people who got their asses kicked
by their counterparts on the other side continue to be put in charge of the party's message. A prediction: The new "war room" will operate a lot like the communications operation of the Kerry campaign, which means they'll get slapped regularly.
