What would happen IF the DNC called for a nationwide strike ???
Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 10:59 AM by welshTerrier2
many comparisons have been made between the reaction to election fraud in the Ukraine and the reaction in the U.S. ... Ukrainians took to the streets; Americans took to the malls ...

but let's take a look at the following hypothetical ... let's say all the recounts occur and they show bush won ... but let's also say the Democratic Party believes massive fraud occurred and refuses to accept the results ... they believe the election was a total fraud and so was the recount process ... in response to this, they walk out of Congress and call for a nationwide strike to put an end to bushiness (on edit: oops, freudian slip ... should be: business) as usual ...

i doubt anyone on DU believes the Democratic Party will ever have the guts to do this, but I thought a little "positive visioning" couldn't hurt ...

so, the questions on the table are:

1. if this happened, would the American people respond in ways similar to what we're seeing in the Ukraine ...
2. are Americans really apathetic or are they just waiting for direction from the top (and is there a difference?) ...
3. if the hypothetical actually takes place, what would the likely outcomes be ??

5. No we don't.

Reid is a center-right Dem, to be sure, but he is a capable fighter. He just assembled the Dem's first rapid response media team to counter the Repubs and *gasp* he staffed it with liberals from Ted Kennedy's and Chuck Shumer's staff.

2. Those old ladies in pants will let the crime gang walk right over them
Change will have to occur from the bottom up. Looking to leaders is generally a bad idea; looking to the DLC for leadership is suicide.

3. Corporations would never contribute to another Democratic candidate
so this will never, ever happen. The DNC is a PR firm not the head of a polical movement.

That's really it.

7. American people would do nothing
My mother is staunchly anti-GOP, anti-Bush and pro-Democrat -- AND thinks Bush stole the election -- and if this happened, she would do nothing. Why? The other day, I told her that I would never buy a Dell, and she told me to "get over it." Seriously. I freaked out. She apologized later, but it IS what she really believes. My mom doesn't think one person could make a difference, neither would she threaten her own little consumer bubble. I love her, but it's the plain truth.

8. Their voices would lower by two octaves
as it would indicate their balls have finally dropped.

I was worrying that we were too late on this, that the time was immediately AFTER the fraudulent election. But now, maybe not. The research done by DUers, and the work of Bev Harris and the mounting evidence just might actually improve the prospects for this.

A well timed, hi profile press conference outlining the evidence, in which the leadership called for a nationwide strike, would be very effective. But you know what? We don't have any media. It can't grow legs without the support of the MSM, and they won't touch this. Keith Olberman isn't enough.

9. Speaking for myself, I'd probably drop dead from the shock of it
:evilfrown:

Seriously, I think if the DNC, especially in the days right after the election, had called for a national strike, passions were so inflamed that I think there would have been a huge response on both sides. This would be good and bad...we'd actually start resembling an active, enlivened democracy. However, I think the potential for a crisis like the one developing in Ukraine could also occur.

10. We are all alone on this if we want to do a Ukraine style protest
Lucifer will convert to Christianity long before the DNC stands up for the people of America on an issue in which there is no self-serving angle for them.

11. well, let me twist my hypothetical a bit ... the Dean factor ...
let's say Dean became the new DNC chair ...

would you still think such calls for widespread grassroots protests unlikely ??

12. Dean won't do it
A nationwide strike will hurt business, which is the last thing either capitalist party wants to do.

13. A strike could easily become a recipe for a true disaster
Let's just say the *idea* of it gets legs. And let's just say that the media (gasp) picks up the story.

Organizers organize.

The dem leadership starts to talk loudly about it.

Police in DC have their leaves suspended.

In anticipation of the huge crowds, DC plans for a shut down on the planned date of the event.

Camera stands are erected on the National Mall.

Judy Woodreff gets her hair done by "Sr. Jose" just for the that day.

Tucker Carlson gets a new bowtie with cute dancing elephants on it.

.... and then ......

...... and then ........

...... two thousand three hundred and twelve people show up.

Everyone else is either too scared to lose a day of work and risk being fired ..... or are totally apathetic ....... or are afraid of the "government's" stated plans for internment of errent protesters ..... or for any one of a thousand reasons, simply don't show.

Like your birthday party to which no one comes.

I suspect our citizenry would simply not participate. Left or right, Dem or Rep ..... there would never be enough people to make a difference. And the press would spin out of control with stories like "Public Shows Total Support for Administration By Ignoring Calls to Protest" ...... and ....... "Leftists in America Fail to Rally Any Support" .... etc.

While I think a Ukrainian style protest would be wonderful, I just don't think it would happen here. In the end, the apathy would show and our side would lose all credibility. A "Million Person" march attended by a small number just looks stupid.
