Two Veteran Journalists Critical Of Today's Media Coverage

December 06, 2004

Stonington — What is the state of journalism in this country when the national press, historically disparaged as the “liberal media,” gets pilloried by both the right and the left for its flabby coverage of politics and the war in Iraq?

Morley Safer and Osborn Elliott, two doyens of the news business, met at the community center Sunday night for a conversation in which they questioned why reporters cling to a false ideal of objectivity that prevents them from being critical and skeptical purveyors of the news.

In a talk sponsored by the Stonington Free Library, the two colleagues and old friends discussed how to fortify coverage in an era when news outlets are so obsessed with being even-handed that their stories take the shape of point-counterpoint rather than an incisive examination of an issue.

“We've heard a lot of criticism of the election coverage — or non-coverage — by the right and the left alike,” said Elliott, the Stonington Borough resident and former editor of Newsweek.

2. It's about four years too late to be critical of the media.
They've sold out, they've drunk the kool-aid by the hundreds of gallons. They've received our emails and phone calls and roundly ignored then all. Hell, they've probably even read the article linked above.

They have no intention of ceasing their whoring for bu$h.

They are a lost cause.
Fuck them very much.

There will be a backlash-- there's already a growing backlash-- the pendulum will swing back.

Just like their repug brothers, the ms media will pay a price for their duplicity.

Because all those old sayings really are true: you reap what you sow.

Check out the link to the 100+ under-reported stories at the bottom of the letter (from the blaster) that goes to "friends" (people you know). When enough find out how the media has failed us so miserably, THE MEDIA WILL LOSE IT'S CREDIBILITY with the general public. In fact, I'm going to go add this warning to the media letter.

Also gonna tell 'em they better cover the new Conyers forum (hearing), to be held in Ohio on Monday (just announced by Olbermann).

Get Up, Stand Up, stand up for your right
Get Up, Stand Up, don't give up the fight

---------------------------------------------------
The letter:

Hi,

I’m emailing you to ask that you join me in urging our national media to cover the 2004 Presidential Election problems. These problems are so serious that they have put the results into question. At the request of 12 Congressmen, the GAO (the Congressional investigative department) has agreed to investigate the 57,000 reported irregularities. This is not a Democrat, Republican or Independent issue. It is an issue that must concern all voters. It calls into question the results of the 2004 election, and potentially jeopardizes our future elections. Please go to the url below and send the following letter to our national mainstream media.
http://www.independentmediasource.com/voteintegrity.htm

P.S. If you would like to know more about all this, please watch the Conyers Forum online (link below). You can also read short summaries (or the full articles), and see for yourself how the National Media has been neglecting this important story (link below).

Sincerely,

--------------------------------------------------------

URGENT REQUEST! PLEASE COVER THE NEW CONYERS FORUM IN OHIO ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 13TH.

On December 8, Rep. John Conyers hosted a congressional forum in which verifiable evidence of vote suppression and compelling indications of vote manipulation in Ohio were detailed by panels of witnesses. One witness who previously served as an international elections inspector recounted incidents in Ohio that would never have been permitted in El Salvador’s elections. Yet we ignore these disturbing reports from within our own borders?

C-SPAN and several radio stations carried the forum live. Concurrently, mainstream media covered stories such as Basketbrawl, Martha Stewart’s incarceration and Scott Peterson’s sentencing hearing. One day later, a search on CNN.com returns no hits regarding this forum and the only mention at MSNBC.com is on Keith Olbermann’s blog. ABC.com has a short story, but the headline does not appear on their home page.

I am baffled by the media silence and appalled by the republican absence in this critical moment in American democracy. This may well be the least partisan yet most important issue facing our nation today. We cease to function as a representative republic when we cannot guarantee that the will of the people has been upheld.

As you know, the national news media are rapidly losing credibility and audiences. Many people simply don't trust the media any more, because the media have failed to fulfill their responsibility to investigate and report genuine hard news. The 2004 election provides you with an unprecedented opportunity to get the scoop on your competition, with a story of national, even global importance. If you choose to ignore this story, you do so at your peril, because your audience will be judging you on this, and will seek out information from other outlets if it's not available on yours.

I urge the media to begin full and prominent coverage of the investigations into the 2004 election and the process to reform our voting systems.

13. don't be too sure; they are lost to objectivity AND fairness.
Read "The Republican Noise Machine," the muckraking book of the decade.

It's systemic, and it's UGLY as sin.

Run by former right-wing writer David Brock-- it really nails those who lie.

You can even query on person (e.g., Limbaugh, Hannity), Program, and Publishers/Outlets/and Networks to get the scoop on your particular area of interest.

Aside from "The Republican Noise Machine," Brock wrote "Blinded by the Right"-- I applaud his courage in coming to our side!!

9. Did it
That was a little time consuming but well worth it. I wrote my own letter since they sometimes ignore and get snippy when they get to many identical letters.

Thanks for posting this.
