Northeastern Republican Governors
I posted in the Connecticut Discussion Board a question about why Connecticut has a Republican governor. Later, I realized that New York also has a Republican governor. At this point I will broaden my question. Why are there so many Republican governors in Northeastern states? In the Connecticut board someone replied that part of the reason for Connecticut having a Republican governor is that the Democratic Party split and was not able to put up a challeneger against Rowland. Is this the case for other Northeastern states? What has happened in other Northeastern states? Why the Republican governors in the Northeastern states?

6. NOT FOR LONG
Romney hasn't done shit as governor. He completely failed to bring more Repukes into the legislature. He's letting Bechtel skip out on properly fixing the Big Dig mess. Etc. etc.

I don't see positive prospects for his re-election. I suspect he'll get offered some sort of fed appointment in '06 to improve his national image and avoid the embarrassment of the Somerville rep (Carnahan?) or Tom Reilly (attorney gen.) spanking him silly in the election.

Mitt just wants to be president....

2. Vermont has a republican governor
and it's perhaps the most liberal state in the country. After Dean stepped down, the Lt. Gov, Doug Racine ran against Jim Douglas. It was a case of the bland and the boring running against the bland and the boring. Douglas ran a better campaign and won. This year he was re-elected. He's not a bad guy at all. Vermonters really like to vote for folks from both parties. Heck, we like to vote for Independents and Progressives too. We have several progressives in the legislature. Douglas is a pro-choice republican. He's backed re-importation of drugs from Canada through a lawsuit against the feds. He's strong on anti-pollution measures. We can live with that. BTW, MA also has a republican governor. NH just voted in a dem.

3. Same reasons for Dem governors in the South

That's a red/blue map of governors. The reason OK, TN, LA etc have Democrats in the State House is the same reason why NY, CT, MA have Republicans -- they tend to be more moderate. A CT Republican is probably more liberal than a GA Democrat; similarly, a TN Democrat is probably more conservative than a NY Republican.

What we're seeing is a defenestration of issues not really being debated on the local level, and instead a focus on other, locally-important issues.

4. Balance of power...

is important. Republicans in the northeast are fiscally conservative but socially liberal compared to the rest of the country. All politics are local--as it should be.IMO Up until the 90s and the impeachment crap, the northeast was pretty bipartisan.

5. Our party needs to work harder at getting more Dem Govs out there
especially in those Blue states. NY will be blue thanks to Spitzer, byt MA, Conn, and Vernmont should also easily be blue if we try harder.
