ABC Poll: Bush rating back below 50%
Poll: Americans Split Over President's Performance
Analysis
By GARY LANGER

Dec. 20, 2004 — The latest ABC News/Washington Post poll finds that President Bush's overall job approval rating is just below 50 percent, with 48 percent of Americans approving of his performance and 49 percent disapproving.

This rating is a continuation of the long-term, close division that has been evident in public assessments of Bush's performance — essentially an even split — across most of the past year. In one change, more respondents disapprove "strongly" (38 percent) than approve "strongly" (27 percent) of his performance. This is Bush's lowest "strong" approval since Sept. 11, 2001.

The president's rating is considerably weaker now than it was a year ago, when it was 11 points higher, and than two years ago, when it was 18 points higher.

Saw on CNN a poll that had Bush at 49%. And Rummy's rating is in the toilet.

It's going to be a long four years, ... or not.

1. His ratings have consistently dropped every year.
I wonder where they'll be in four years?

2. The election may have been 1 year too soon
His approval rating was right about the upper 40s/50% throughout most of the year, which is the cutoff point. Carter and Bush I had catastrophic ratings in the 30s. Reagan and Clinton both were in the mid-to-high 50s or mid-60s. The reason this race was so close and stayed so close is that when the incumbent's approval is 49%, as it was through much of the year, that indicates the likelihood of a close race. The lowest it dropped was 43/44% earlier this year, but it was back up by fall.

Kerry would have won easily if Bush's approval ratings were in the low 40s or 30s. (Note: I'm not trying to absolve Kerry of any blame in the loss - I'm just saying it was always a slightly uphill battle with *'s approval ratings at 49%/50%).

6. They dropped when his Campaign blitz ended

Rove's dark genius is focused (or unfocused) elsewhere once the Bush mirage no longer needed constant massaging to assure the clods hoppers in the Red States to vote. Poor Limbaugh, Hannity and their ilk are putting their fingers in the dike with lessening effect.

5. And THAT was an ABC poll?! Imagine the results in an UNbiased source?
I'm guessing more in the neighborhood of 30%, if he's lucky.

7. MORE Americans DISAPPROVE of bush than approve.
HEH!

And he hasn't even had his "most lavish and expensive in US history" coronation yet.

8. The really sad thing is that a majority of Americans
don't agree with Bush on the issues, but they weren't willing to vote for Kerry.

9. That "strongly disapprove" looks WAY too low.

10. This should come as no surprise, his rating have been below
50% for some time (in reality) the main stream media played with the approval rating all throughout the election cycle. But now that he is the pres again what does it mean, he has his mandate and no more elections to inhibit his agenda. Were all in for the ride of our lives.

12. Does this tell us that Kerry was not a good candidate?
Or just that the Republicans are much better propagandists than we are? Obviously people aren't happy with Bush and probably would have voted for a better alternative if they thought the Democrats presented one.
