2004 Nobel Peace Prize Winner Wangari Muta Maathai
http://www.greenbeltmovement.org/biographies.php

On C-SPAN now, broadcast from Oslo, Norway, recipient of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize, Kenyan Wangari Muta Maathai is making her acceptance speech (dated 12/10/04).

What an inspiration!! Started the Greenbelt Movement in Kenya in which 30 million trees were planted; speaks about the linkage between the environment and peace and democracy.

The audience filled with the kind of people we don't seem to see much of these days: caring, compassionate, environmentally committed. Too often the critical issue of the environment gets lost in the fray.

People like Wangari Muta Maathai give me hope.

2. Isn't she just wonderful???!!!!
Democracy Now covered a large portion of her speech the day after she won. I also heard her on NPR last week.

She is well deserving of this award. In large part, she engaged the disadvantaged, most of them women, in this cause. In the end they empowered themselves while helping their environment. She gives me hope as well!
