Sean Penn Reflects on His 2002 Letter to 'Washington Post' on War

NEW YORK In the transcript of an interview with the Boston Globe's Ty Burr, published this weekend on the newspaper's Web site, actor/activist Sean Penn reflected on the criticism he received in the media around his two visits to Iraq.

"I wrote a letter to the Washington Post a couple of years ago, before we went into the war," Penn said. "The very things I was criticized for saying then are now being reported by Bill O'Reilly. I was criticized for suggesting the possibility there were no weapons of mass destruction.

"But the bigger issue is that it's an absolutely stupid notion that you should take the title of someone's profession and attach it to what they should not do. It has nothing to do with citizenry. I think they should shove it with their hypocritical Ronald Reagan standard right up their ass."

and will always be rememberd as such. Bill O'Reilly will be remembered as a lying, perverted, hate-mongering, gasbag (if he's remembered at all.)

"celebrity" has to say about anything whatsoever? Why does American *hang* on every damn word some "celebrity" says or does? How sick can it get? Talk about twisted values.

And that goes for the 24/7 self-anointed talking heads that jabber away about their own opinions! Or those on the radio talking-jocks too.

Are they any more important merely because they appear on the *big screen* or the small screen in your living room or the radio?

When you're a celebrity a lot of people are interested in what you have to say. Just the way it is.

If Sean Penn chooses to take that publicity and donate it to a good cause more power to him.

Do you care what people with lots of money do with their money?

Do you care what corporations do with their profits?

Similarly, it matters what someone with an abundance of fame does with that commodity.


On the other hand, let's say that your issue is not a question as to what a celebrity does with their fame, but why us common folk care about the opinions of the celebrated ones.

The answer is simple. They are citizens. Forget the fact that they are celebrities for a moment. If some John Doe on the street corner had said what Sean Penn said, and the newspaper reported it, would you be as dimissive?

My very good guess would be no. You would cheer that John Doe on for his courage and intelligence.

But, God forbid John Doe is famous. Suddenly, the opinions of the famous matter least of all.

The only thing I can take from this is that you have a bias against fame.
