The Bush twins' "Cheers"
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/23/fashion/23wash.html

"...Part of the allure of Smith Point is that the president's daughters are treated just like everyone else, regulars say. 'They feel like they can be Jenna Jones, as opposed to Jenna Bush...'"

2. With their alcohol records
they should not be treated as everyone else.

3. Can you imagine the hell the right wing
would have raised if Amy Carter or Chelsea Clinton had been repeatedly ticketed for alcohol abuse? Yet they give the Bush twins a free ride. OK.

8. There's also a double-standard because they're "girls"
If * had twin sons, they would not be treated as entertaining bimbos who are blithely apolitical.

4. Let them have their little club
It's a dump, though it has gotten nicer in the last four years. Quite frankly the old Rat in Kenmore Square in Boston was more hopping back in the day.

No one elected them, and really, we should feel sorry for them--look at their family tree! The fact that they can get out with their pals and party like they don't give a shit is either testimony to their resilience, which should earn praise, or evidence that they are brain dead, which should earn sympathy. What should they do? Don sackcloth and ashes? Slit their throats? Or just put up with the shit? I guess you have to ask yourself, what would YOU do if your father was a crazy, coked-out, drunken asshole who wants to destroy the world? And you have NO influence over him? Hell, I'd drink, too!!!

They aren't the problem, because they were not on any ballot. I say be amused by them (because they DO have the capacity to amuse!), but don't be mean about them, and don't be angry with them--they may not be moral leaders or social activists, but they are probably pretty average kids trapped in a world not of their own making.

7. And bravo to them!
It just shows that when you have one parent who started life as a strong Democrat (and that was Daddy, not Mommy) that you can inherit a conscience.

And I think Chelsea is a credit to the Clintons, Amy is a credit to the Carters...but I sure would not have voted for either Clinton or Carter based on their kids, be they paragons or problem children.

I think the twins distract from the issues (and who knows, they may be being used for just that purpose...). It's just a waste of time to beat up on them. They provide us plenty of amusement just by living their lives, but if we expend even an iota of anger towards them, it just does not advance our causes. It may make us feel better for a second, but it really doesn't matter, in the big picture. Laugh, tease, kid--sure, I'll have fun with that, but I can't be mean about them. They weren't on any ballot.

So party on, Bush twins, party on. Drink away, wear racy clothing, stay out late and hang around with inappropriate people! Keep doing things that piss off the far right!!
