Cris Matthews just accused Robert Redford of being farther to the right ..
.. than he, Tweety, is! Redford was fairly well dumbfounded. Tweety's comment came after a deliberate and well thought response by Robert Redford on Tweety's question of Redford's support or non-support of the Iraq war. Tweety took the measured response as support for the war and jumped in like he (Tweety) was an anti-war activist from the get-go. I think RR is still scratchin' his head. Tweety, on the other hand, is still crowing.

15. Did you frequent the Fish Market on King Street?
Sigh....I've spent many happy hours on that part of King Street. I miss it, I do.

19. I frequented the Union Street Tap Room in the Carlos Meyers days.
But that was almost 10 years ago. Carlos was famed for the perfect-pour Martini. We were regulars for the food, especially the "Tap-Room Salad."

I used to do construction at the Fishmarket, and other properties of Mr. Ray's there....the Italian place at the other end of the block from Fishmarket (can't believe I can't think of it....we used to hang out there; one of our roommates was a bartender upstairs). Did a lot of stuff at his house, just off 395. He was a real, REAL ahole--repug fundraiser, as was his jerk son, who took over after he croaked.

10. Journalists aren't suposed to donate to campaigns. The fact
that Chris Matthews hasn't donated to a campaign in over ten years is because of that.

Chris Matthews has said he voted for Bush in 2000.

When he's "up" he's with us, and when he's "down" he's against us.

or the other way around, I can't decide...

7. I think Matthews is fairly liberal
although sometimes, like on Coronation, oops, Inauguration Day, I wanted to smack him. He is a smart guy who at times seems really disturbed by the BS this Bush administration hands out. He can get really aggressive questioning the BSers. I do think he is disturbed by all that is going on, and we should encourage him to continue to dig. He is a pit bull when he gets onto something.

11. "outspoken against the war"
He was against the illegal invasion of Iraq from the get go. He has not changed in the view. He is also disgusted with the Bush Junta green light of torture. I feel that he is Dem (Repub Lite).

18. Chris Mathews is whatever he needs to be in order to get his payola.
He is extremely proud of his time spent in The Peace Corp and acts as if it were the battlefields of Vietnam. He talks so fast and furious that he spits and drools on his guests. He acts like someone that could use some ritalin.

21. OK, one Redford reference on DU tonight...
... and two Paul Newman references in the same night.

Butch/Sundance 2008?

I'm only kidding, but I found the timing to be funny.

23. don't laugh . . . Redford would be a great candidate . . .
if the Repugs can run a third rate actor with a third rate mind (Reagan, for those too young to remember) and end up winning two terms, then we can certainly run a first rate actor with a first rate mind . . . and a strong commitment to the environment to boot . . . give him a VP candidate with a solid foreign policy background, and we're in . . .

26. He would! I hadn't thought about it. But he's SO Charismatic, and
intelligent, and has such integrity. And has such a good business mind (exactly what a good Prez. should have).

And he's so open to change! Not afraid to try new things...which would be such a breath of fresh air to Politics!

Edited on Sat Jan-29-05 12:18 AM by Wrinkle_In_Time
...at the coincidental timing of this. What are the odds of Newman and Redford being cited in the same day on DU? It was just too good an opportunity to pass up without my Butch/Sundance ticket comment (some people post equally fantastic ticket suggestions here and they are serious).

I have a lot of respect for both Paul Newman and Robert Redford in everything that they have done in their various careers (and in what little I know about their private lives). I hadn't seriously thought about them running for office. Now that I do, I think it's a bad idea. I'm not totally impressed with actors/entertainers running for U.S. political office. Reagan, Bono, Schwarzenegger, Ventura... feel free to correct me on this, but I don't consider them as legislative/executive role models.

I confess to being intrigued by Sen. Fred Thompson in the 1980's, but I don't know if he was a politician who acted or vice versa. Maybe I just watched "The Hunt for Red October" too much.

{Edited for really bad, drunken spelling. There may be more.}

I know Matthews wasn't for the Iraq War, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone that believes he is Left of Robert Redford. Is Redford against the war?

Interesting...
