Baucus speaks out against Bush Social Security plan
Senator says he won't cave in to pressure

By FAITH BREMNER
Tribune Capitol Bureau

WASHINGTON — One reason for a presidential trip to Montana next week could be to turn the heat up under the state's Democratic senator, Max Baucus, to support a plan to restructure Social Security, political pundits say.

However, during a visit to Helena on Thursday, Baucus said he is ple-ased that the president will stop in Montana but it will make no difference in his attitude about the plan.

"Not at all," Baucus told The Associated Press

3. Yes - he was such a
Bush sympathizer for so long (tax cut/Iraq) that I thought he'd gone to the dark side.

Now...to get rid of Conrad Burns, Montana will be BRIGHT BLUE!!!

4. We'll see in 2006..
If the Dems can get a good opponent to 'Been there FOREVER' Burns and give Baucus in D.C. (and don't forget the Rep. seat as well)

5. Maybe the letter I rote him worked
saying he was no better than a republican and that if he didn't shape up not only would I not vote for him again but would actively campaign for a republican to take his place.
The guy has been a disgrace till now.

Last time I wrote asking that he support alternative energy bills his reply was that with coal strip mining deregulation no alternative energy was needed.

9. Good.
I'm originally from Bozeman, so big rivalrly (that and that all the girls from Butte beat me up regularlly). But Butte is such a beautiful and historic city that I want to see it grow and prosper (as long as you all drive to Bridger Bowl to ski and give Bozeman your tourist money ;))

13. A funny aside...
When I was a wee lass and learning to read, my naive little self was in a quandary when I came to the name, Butte, in my text book. I was afraid to say it because I thought it was pronounced "butt" and I didn't want to get in trouble. Not important, just sparked an old memory. The dilemmas of childhood would be welcome again.

14. He deserves encouragement for this stmt
I for one will be telling him how happy I was to read this. Maybe if they get enough positive feedback for standing up, it will become easier for them to do.

15. Good - but I still don't like him
He just strikes me as the ultimate political opportunist. He seems willing to sell out to whichever side seems politically powerful at the moment.

But maybe he'll change. I'm sure he has some redeeming qualities and has done some good.
