On a broader level, Dean's comeuppance may be the encouraging result of hope prevailing over anger among Democratic voters. Dean's candidacy is centered, to a disturbing degree in our view, on two negative impulses: loathing of President Bush and implacable opposition to the war in Iraq. In the early stages of the nominating process, Dean's snarling, hot-tempered rhetoric attracted a core of wrathful Democratic supporters united by their resentment of Bush. But, in Iowa at least, most Democrats were attracted instead to the positive visions outlined by Kerry and Edwards. In reaction to the Iowa results, the centrist Democratic Leadership Council rightly declared: "Democrats need to offer answers, not just anger."
