Governor Bredesen Starts up Pre-K programs
Here's the link: http://www.tn.gov/governor/ for more information.

Nashville – Feb 4th- Governor Phil Bredesen today launched a new state Web site, “TNPreK.org,” a resource for parents, teachers, childcare providers and community leaders who would like information about early childhood education.

“When I meet with groups of teachers I often ask them, ‘If you had another dollar to spend on education, where would you put it?’ Overwhelmingly, they say pre-K,” Bredesen said. “I urge every Tennessean to visit this Web site and see what our teachers are talking about – a quality early childhood education program that will give our children a crucial head start in life.”

Visitors to the Web site can read about hands-on learning activities that are taking place in 148

pre-K classrooms across the state and review studies showing how these lessons foster a child’s curiosity, social development, literacy and math and science skills.

Tennesseans can also view the Governor’s plan to expand the state’s pre-Kindergarten initiative, which began in 1998 as a pilot effort for at-risk children, into a statewide program available to every four-year-old in the state. On Monday, January 31, 2005, Bredesen presented to legislators his 2005-2006 budget, which includes a $25 million down payment toward this goal.

“We are all stakeholders in the dream to give our children the earliest possible advantages in living and learning,” Bredesen said. “I urge all Tennesseans to visit this site and gain the information they need to become a part of this mission.”

2. I hope so
I haven't read much about it lately. Have you heard any news?

4. He didn't get rid of TennCare
He just plans to kick thousands off the dole. :(
He's retaining the name in hopes that future budgets will be able to keep adding these people back on in grouped segments.

6. It should be based upon income!
Ken Lay and Co should not get the benefit of a national health plan. They can pay for their own.

3. I welcome this program, but it's being nit-picked to death by both sides.
The Republicans are yammering on about how far this will go ("will it become a pricey baby-sitting service?") and Memphis Democrat Cohen is challenging the funding, saying that lottery profits are only supposed to go to college scholarships and not this.

I don't have high hopes of its passage, sadly.

5. From what I'm reading on it
it sounds like a nice idea and getting kids started early on education. Maybe it'll help kids even like it. I know for a lot of years in public education I didn't like school and didn't like reading and studying. I hope at least the book thing goes through. Who cares if it's babysitting too? As long as there's programs out there to help education. Our nation's education are just getting even more stupid with test scores and stuff. Know what I mean?
