Weird, Isn't It ??? - The SOTUS, The Dem Rebuttal, And Dean's 'Implosion'
*Reposted here, due to WillyT's inability to memorize more than 5 rules at a time, LOL*

According to reports, many of our fellow countrymen and women were 'shocked', 'appalled', even frightened, by Dean's speech at the end of the Iowa Caucuses the other night. We all saw what happened, but the interpretations vary. The ONLY journalist I saw defending it was Mara Liason on Faux News. She said she was in the room, and the tone was perfectly appropiate for the energy sweeping through that venue. The myriad of Dean supporters there wanted to hear some positive fire and brimstone from their man, and wanted to keep the movement going. Dean delivered for them, in a big way. Liason thouight that perhaps it was too 'hot' for television though. Apparently, Marshall McLuhan was right.

Maybe Dean didn't realize that what he was saying, and how he was saying it, would impact his campaign negatively. Perhaps he did, and didn't care. Perhaps it was more important to be true to his troops, than to slide into the establishmentary contrition that so many others desired. I must admit to my own feelings of shock at Dean's raucus speech, but I found myself smiling ear to ear because of it. Apparently, I prefer my candidates to be 'hot' too!!!

Which brings me to what we DO accept coming over our aptly named 'boob-tubes'.

Apparently, an unelected, illegally installed, son-of-a-Bush can appear in front of millions of people to talk up the virtues and benefits of an illegal war, with it's attendant 'preemtive' future implications, and that ISN'T outrageous. He can stand in what used to be a rather 'hallowed' place, the same place from which he LIED to us all about why we had to initiate that very war, and tell the world that the U.S. will do this anytime they feel it appropriate. He can pressure the Congress to make his tax cuts permanent, thereby increasing the deficit to 1 trillion dollars over the next few years and mortgaging not just our children's future, but the future of the whole goddamned country. But hey, that's just political speech, and at least he's smiling. He can also manage to piss off both the right (ever expanding government dollars) and the left (amend the Friggin Constitution for anti-gay bigots everywhere) with out a harsh word, or a raised voice. Damn, he's SO pleasant.

And... After giving the 'opposition' texts of the speech (or hints at least) ahead of time with which they could prepare a stunningly strong and cogent reply to his SOTUS, we get a response that while true on the matters of fact, was narcoleptic and frustratingly polite in its delivery. If there was ONE MOMENT for the Dems to coalesce both in message and messenger to spit in the eye of this well-born criminal ruler, it was THAT moment. They should have had Ted Kennedy do it. Or Robert Byrd for that matter. Paul wellstone would have been great, but... Heck, Barney Frank, Al Gore, Al Franken, Jesse Ventura, Gary Coleman for God's sake...

But the current meme, is that Dean gave the outrageous speech this week.

Hmmm... I guess I DO like my politicians 'hot' too!

1. I loved his speech
That was so Dean! That's the kind of stuff I like to hear. A lot of other politicians have good platforms but just don't fire up people the way Dean does.

2. All according to plan
My family was sitting around Thanksgiving talking politics and decided that whoever the Dem nominee is, the Republicans and their minions in the press will portray him as either a liar or a nut.

I guess they've decided on the latter for Dean. I'm not for or against Dean, but I was pretty pissed off today to see a front page article in my local paper talking about how crazy Dean seemed when he made that speech. Nice to see they can follow Rove's orders.

3. My husband was in Iowa when Dean made the speech. He said
that the tone of the speech was not improper for the room, which was unbearably noisy, plus Dean was losing his voice. (Guess he racheted up to keep it working...) Anyway, it was the small screen that made it seem so bad. And the camera could not see the situation as part of a whole. I feel bad that Dean is being hurt by this, but I'm afraid he is.

7. I don't think the CW is right on the Dean speech.
I just don't get the vibe that it's going to hurt him. I haven't spoken with anyone in person, outside of Limbot, who found it to be an issue. Most people thought it was entirely appropriate, if not awesome. And I'm not just talking about Dean supporters.

8. Exactly... But See, That's An Open, Well Rounded View Of The Event !!!

What I'm trying, somewhat lamely, to say, is that now that the TV Nation conditioning program (begun in the '50's) is complete (not a reference to Moore), is that the rest of us not only are afraid of how it will play in Peoria, but how it plays within our own minds.

I was initially shocked! But then I thought about thinking it through.

Too bad we are the exception, and not the rule.

Who was it who said something to the effect that, 'With Democracy, you get the government you deserve."?

Since majority thinking and voting rules the roost, we do get what we deserve, unfortunately, so far.

:argh:

11. I think the speech was bad for Dean, but good for Democratic party
I think it will prevent dean from winning the nomination b/c a lot of people (older people) will not vote for him b/c they will be afraid the speech will make him unelectable. But the speech gives the politicians of the democratic party a whole new cast. If they keep playing it, it may draw in new democratic voters.

13. That's painting "older people" with too broad a brush
Some of us remember fondly the hellfire and brimstone that Teddy Roosevelt included in his stump speeches.

Some call it a scream, I think it was a battle cry. I think the south understands that, its in the tradition of their "rebel yell."

Was it unusual YES. It clearly shocked the media to find someone could be charged-up in the face of a third place finish.

17. Well said. We live in bizarro world when Smirky's warmongering
is "noble, reasonable, calm, presidential, and inspiring"....particularly his "we don't need no permission slip" to go blow up anything that twitches line.....all in gross violation of the U.N. charter which this country helped to write.

And Dean's scream, we are told by the media, is somehow just, I dunno, godawful.

I must be living in a dream. This cannot all be real.

20. It all verifies...
...my theory that people love to be bored. Remember, this is a public that made Hootie & the Blowfish and Hughie Lewis and the News multi-platinum recording artists.

Excellent essay, Willy T.
