Delegate Count: Dean Ahead
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/elections/2004/delegateCount.html

These numbers indicate the latest Associated Press estimate of delegates allotted to each candidate for the national presidential nominating convention.

Delegates needed to win: 2,162

Dean: 102
Kerry: 67
Gephardt: 59
Clark: 29
Lieberman: 25
Edwards: 25
Sharpton: 4
Kucinich: 2
Other: 1

The Democratic Party allots a number of delegates to each state based on population (as measured by electoral college votes) and the number of votes the Democratic presidential candidate received in the last general election. The party assigns states additional delegate slots, called "Superdelegates," for Democratic elected officials, party leaders and Democratic members of Congress. Superdelegates are included in the totals.

2. Should probably note
But they're not bound to those commitments, are they? Would seem silly for delegates to go to the convention and vote for Gephardt, for example.

13. If this goes down to the wire and the delegates are split pretty
evenly, I think Gephardt's votes would become a very big chunk of delegates that would be extremely valuable. Dick could become a power broker in this nomination process.

8. Dean is also leading among Democrats nationally
Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean is still the clear first choice of Democrats nationwide, named by 24% as their preferred nominee. Retired General Wesley Clark is at 12%, while Rep. Dick Gephardt is at 11%. Dean's support dipped a bit three weeks ago, after the capture of Saddam Hussein, but it has now returned to its mid-December levels.

15. Not quite accurate
The actual delegate count of committed delegates is:

Kerry 20
Edwards 18
Dean 7
Clark 0
Lieberman 0
Kucinich 0
Sharpton 0

You are listing Super Delegates which are mostly Members of Congress, Senators and other politicians who have expressed a preference but are not committed to any particular candidate.

Dean is not going away. He'll have either the largest contingent of delegates or the second largest in Boston.

22. So what?
Pat Buchanan was "leading" at this point in 1996, and Dick Gephardt was "leading" at this point in 1988. They both got wiped out on Super Tuesday.

23. I thought we had elections in America and not coronation by superdelegates
Furthermore, the bandwagoneers will be jumping off if Dean doesn't win big in NH.

26. Nomination will NOT be decided on the first ballot, unless....
only ONE clear front remains after the primaries,
which IMO is unlikely. Committed delegates are only
committed to vote their man on the first ballot.
After that they may switch as they wish.

Also the so called super delegates will normally vote
the person they are pledged to on the first ballot,
although not bound to do so by rules. The first ballot
is basically a courtesy shown to the person they have
expressed support for.

Unless Kerry or whoever the front runner is wins enough
delegates to win on first ballot, you can bet there will
be 2nd and 3rd ballots with lots of switching & bartering.
This is why candidates like Sharpton will stay in the race
since it gives them power at the convention to extract
promises from those who desire to acquire his delegates.
