Gingrich Gives GOP Social-Security Advice
Gingrich Gives GOP Social-Security Advice

Friday February 25, 2005 8:01 PM

By JEFFREY McMURRAY

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says Republicans should rework their argument about Social Security because Americans aren't buying the idea that a crisis is near.

``As a practicing politician, you can't get the American people worried about 2018,'' Gingrich said Friday at the American Enterprise Institute. ``If I called you and said, '10 years from today your roof is going to need (to be) fixed, would you like to sign the contract this afternoon?' You'd say to me, 'How about calling me back in nine years, 10 months.'''

Gingrich praised President Bush's plan to allow young people the option of privately owned Social Security accounts, but he said immediate benefits - not future concerns - should be the focus of the campaign.

``The urgency ought to be simpler,'' Gingrich said. ``Every day young people are denied the opportunity to have a personal Social Security savings account, they are cheated out of that day's compound interest.''

1. Cheated ... because of their "greedy" parents/grandparents
They've already started class war with the top-heavy tax cuts; now they want generational war as well -- kids resenting their elders getting SS. The Rethugs know nothing but how to divide and conquer, how to make us fight each other. DIVIDERS NOT UNITERS!

2. Cheated of interest on monies that are borrowed? - Can you really get
wealthy by borrowing and paying interest?

Is this another GOP up is down that our media will start to sell us next week?

3. It looks like they've floated this one late on a Friday
to see what the initial reaction is before proceeding further.

6. Yes, papau -- we should be screaming
How hypocritical that they want to "save Social Security" for the younger generation by SADDLING THEM WITH MOUNTAINS OF DEBT.

4. And another thing

My insurance company is cheating me of the money that I pay in premiums. I should be able to keep that in the bank and draw interest. I'll pay the premiums when I need the insurance.

7. Newt doesn't give a shit about what they're actually DOING
He just cares about the ILLUSION, the IMAGE of doing something.

8. Gingrich, the paragon of virtue who divorced one wife
while she was in the hospital with cancer, married the woman that he was cheating with, then cheated on and dumped her a few years later...thinks orphanages are a good thing, probably things poor farms are a good thing too...creator of that oh-so-famous Contract on America...

Yep... We should all run out like good little Americans and listen to him.
