SICKO ad in Home School Digest "The Rod"........
Edited on Mon Feb-28-05 09:40 AM by ElsewheresDaughter
In December the Consumer Product Safety Commission rejected a bid to ban the sale of "The Rod", having found "no basis for determining that the product constitutes a substantial product hazard."

The ad:

Why a rod for training?

The means prescribed by God: "Withhold not correction from a child; for if thou beatest him with a rod, he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod and shalt deliver his soul from hell." Proverbs 23:13-14
Belts are for holding up pants
Spoons are for cooking and eating
Paddleball paddles are for games
Hands are for loving
Rods are for chastening

Instructions:
Try the rod out on yourself ahead of time to determine how much force
you should use to get the result you require.
Chasten on a clothed buttock with the apporate number of swats. Three
to four swats is suggested.
Console the child afterward and affirm your love for him. This will
give you an opportunity to "check his heart" and show the child that
chastening is a form of love.

Features:
Flexible Nylon Rod
More effective results
Less likely to break
More precise control during application
Cushioned Vinyl Grip
Non-slip during training
Durable for years of use

Benifits For The Children:
Promotes a loving atmosphere in the home
Removes guilt and foolishness from their hearts
Developes self-control
Helps children to recieve wisdom

Benifits For The parents:
Lightweight yet durable
Balanced and easy to use
Ideal for car or home
Allows for better parent/child relationship
Results in a more peaceful home
An excellent gift idea

I have to cut back on that, there's about a two foot dent in my wall now.

3. Sick bastards
"Ideal for car or home"
Do they propose that parents beat the shit out of their kids while driving down the road?

"Helps children to receive wisdom"
Love to see some data to prove that statement.

"Promotes a loving atmosphere in the home" and "Results in a more peaceful home"
Yes, nothing more 'loving' and 'peaceful' than violence.

"Less likely to break"
Yes, it's stronger than children's bones!

Proverbs are to be taken "Proverbially" not "literally" you idiots! The Bible was written by MEN, you @!#%&.

These people are totally demented.

After googling on this I found that "Project No Spank," has had some success battling these kooks:

http://www.nospank.net/lawrnc.htm

"A group of us has sent many emails, snail mails, and made phone calls. We've gotten Home School Digest taken off Amazon.com, eBay, and many other websites, as well as removed from The Homeschool Almanac. We've gotten the suppliers of the handles for the whips, Hunt-Wilde Corporation, to stop selling handles from their warehouse to Slide's, and to notify their distributors to small companies about the "Rod" problem.

But Slide's continues to sell their whips and Home School Digest continues to advertise them. The Attorney General in Oklahoma, where Slide's is located, will not do anything about them. Several children's advocacy organizations in Oklahoma have been contacted as well, with the same result. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has received hundreds of complaints about "The Rod," and, incredibly, they will not recall this torture device because there is no proof of injuries from its use. Can you imagine a 2 year old showing someone at the CPSC his injuries from "The Rod?" It's just not going to happen.

We have started a petition to the Governor of Oklahoma, Brad Henry. He seems like a really good guy, and quite progressive, and we're hoping he can do something about shutting Slide's down. Please sign and voice your opinions about "The Rod," and join our activist list: http://parentinginjesusfootsteps.org/petition-2.html.

We could really use more activists, and more ideas for actions to take would be appreciated, too! Slide's is giving indications of expanding; they've started a new "Mini-Rod", 12" long for "use in the car," their ads have gotten bigger, and they are now bragging about selling "The Rod" around the world!! The more people who join in this fight against "The Rod," the better chance we have of stamping it out - PLEASE HELP."

5. Hey, my SIL was telling me that I needed a lesson from Dobson
He apparently advises (and she uses) a method where you squeeze the child at the back of the neck. All I can think of is the "Vulcan death grip" move on Star Trek. She told me I needed to do that to make my son listen. She said it hurts a bit and makes them mind, and you're not seen in public spanking your child.

My SIL is a Focus on the Family groupie. I enjoy going to family reunions in all our Disney garb ;) At one reunion, they even gave everyone a subscription for Dobson's rag. We tossed it. Don't know how he feels about the Rod, but my bet is he would endorse it.

10. yes Dobson endorses The Rod here's what he says.......
When used ''lovingly and properly," Dobson wrote on his website, corporal punishment is an effective tool to instill discipline and does not bring about lasting emotional damage to a child. ''God created this mechanism as a valuable vehicle for instruction," he wrote.

13. Didn't you hear? They're coming out with a Dobson signature model
next year. It's got little phrases printed on it like "Thou shalt not watch gay cartoon characters" and "Beating is just another way to say I love you." It's also got a little more snap to it than the original for that extra sting when you rebuke your child.

It's destined to be a best seller, order yours today.

6. I have a product for those who use "The Rod" on children.
It is called "The Fist"!. Yes, ladies and gentleman, The Fist is the perfect gift for anyone who beats children with objects. Durable, convenient and always on hand, ready to be used at a moments notice on whomever uses The Rod. When used correctly, immediate unconsciouness will occur, thus mitigating the effects of The Rod.

"The Fist"! It's the perfect gift for the users of "The Rod"! Use it early and often!

No to mention the ordinary household tools we take for granted:

* Hairbrushes make wonderful tools of torture

* And for those days when your really tired, whipping a shoe can be a good solution. (I suggest target practice weekly to sharpen your skills.)

* Hangers and belts are also good to use in a pinch, but try not to leave lasting marks or the liberal god haters might come getcha.

18. But they won't be put into jail, they'll be heroes to other fanatics
This is just more eveidence that fundamentalists cannot be reasoned with, and that all the dialogue in the world will never make a difference to these fanatics.

They find a way to abuse their children, and point to the Bible as their justification, they make a product to help in that abuse and
they get a pass.

One day they will find a way to kill or imprison those of us who don't buy into their version of religion, and by then it will be too late.

There seems to be fewer options when it comes to dealing with these
people.

17. Wow....this is truly horrifying
I am a mom of two children, boys age 2 and 3 (almost 4). They can get pretty wild sometimes, but that's part of being young children!

I cannot even imagine a situation where I could take an object and beat my children with it. (And my boys can be frustrating and challenging at times!)

I do wonder how beating your children promotes a better parent/child relationship. In my experience (having been spanked frequently as a child) it does promote blind obedience, simply out of fear of being spanked, you do whatever you are told, quickly.

These people are horrible.

23. Considering they believe God crucified his only Son, I'm not surprised
And then there's Abraham (I think it was) who was prepared to sacrifice his own son because God told him to.

And the bloody civil war with King David, King Solomon and family.

And Lott telling the people of Sodom to rape his virgin daughter.

The Bible has many, many examples of condoned child abuse in its stories and in its proscribed punishments.

36. death for cursing one’s parents, Lev 20:9
"The means prescribed by God: "Withhold not correction from a child; for if thou beatest him with a rod, he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod and shalt deliver his soul from hell." Proverbs 23:13-14"

death for cursing one’s parents, Lev 20:9

My favorite however:
"no bastard shall enter the assembly of the Lord, not even to the tenth generation" ("non ingredietur mamzer hoc est de scorto natus in ecclesiam Domini usque ad decimam generationem"). Deuteronomy 23:2

Of course the newer translated versions of this law, that penalizes children for their parents indiscretions, smooth out the wording, i.e., the New American Bible now says "no child of an incestuous union", which was expedient considering that finding a non-bastard today is like seeing someone who doesn’t have a tattoo.

This is beyond sick, especially the deep damage inflicted by linking abuse and love. This just sets up these children for lifetimes of abusive relationships and inflicts psychic wounds far deeper than the physical ones.

They will be receiving from various sociopaths , cops, drill sargeants, spouses and neighbors as they fumble their unsocialized way into society.

You know, public school is about more than education. It's a microcosm of society.

Hey, maybe mom can leave the family rod to her favorite kid in the will.
